Pojokan pengarang kumpulan dalam The Star pasti sedap dibaca peminat-peminat Firster evanglistanya hari ini.
Dalam rencana bertajuk ‘Unifying Gimmick‘, Wong Chun Wai menulis tentang seorang penyanyi Melayu bergelar Hilmi yang telah menghibur rakan-rakan Kristian si penulis itu di sebuah gereja.
Hilmi yang berasal dari Kampung Datuk Keramat, KL, pada lazimnya akan memulakan persembahan beliau dengan mendendangkan lagu Kantonis berjudul ‘朋友’ yang dipopularkan oleh bintang Hong Kong Alan Tam. Beliau juga mampu menyanyi lagu Bollywood Hindi serta lagu dalam bahasa Tamil.
Chun Wai menceritakan bahawa penyanyi tersebut biasanya akan memberitahu para hadirin bahawa orang Malaysia, tidak kira kaum, adalah pang yeow (bermaksud ‘kawan’ dalam bahasa Cina) semua, and orang Malaysia harus tidak mengendah segala bising (“all the disruptive noises”) dan kecoh yang dibuat ahli-ahli politik.
Bagi Chun Wai, Hilmi ialah seorang Malaysia contoh yang berasa cukup selesa apabila mengambil bahagian dalam program keramaian yang melibatkan peserta pelbagai kaum (“genuinely comfortable in a multiracial gathering”).
Chun Wai menulis:
“Now, what has made this entertainer [nama pentas: Hilmi Gimmick] so outstanding is that he is able to bring the message of unity, love and peace in one evening more effectively than what our politicians can do in their lifetime.”
Chun Wai menceritakan tentang satu persembahan makan malam mengutip derma untuk Gereja Emmanuel Methodist yang dijayakan Hilmi pada minggu lepas. Acara sumbangsih itu telah diadakan di SJK (C) Yuk Chai di Petaling Jaya.
Pengarang kumpulan The Star itu berkata: “Although he [Hilmi] is a Muslim, he told the audience that he has no problem performing at a church event.”
Tambah Chun Wai lagi:
“Turning to the cameraman, he jokingly challenged him to upload the clips on YouTube, as he loudly proclaimed that those who make racist remarks should have their heads examined.
“He [Hilmi] certainly struck a chord among us when he said it was more important to think and do good. A good heart, he declared, is what matters the most.”
Nampaknya Chun Wai membayangkan bahawa sesiapa yang dianggapnya mengeluarkan kata-kata berbaur rasis sebenarnya orang yang berhati busuk.
GAMBAR ATAS: Pengarang kumpulan The Star teruja dengan Hilmi yang sanggup mengenakan kostum Cina ala Hakim Pao (seorang watak mashyur dalam sejarah Cina) apabila menyanyi lagu tema Wong Fei Hong (wayang kung fu).
Chun Wai juga hairan kenapa pendekatan hidup yang diamalkan Hilmi – “such an inspiring approach to life” – yang begitu mesra nilai-nilai Cina seperti menhormati talian kekeluargaan (“filial piety”) tidak mendapat sambutan di kalangan orangramai secara lebih meluas.
Sebaliknya Chun Wai merintih “we have allowed divisive and pointless political talk, which only serves the selfish interest of the politicians, to take control”.
Terus mengutuk lagi, Chun Wai melenting:
“Malaysians want to hear more stories of unity after a bruising general election. It is time to heal and not to hurt further. IT IS TIME TO SHOW RECONCILIATION, NOT RETRIBUTION.”

Chris, My preference would be to have only the Sekolah Kebangsaan and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan using Bahasa Malaysia as Bahasa Malaysia as the medium of instruction for all Malaysian School Children … plus, as a compulsory subject depending on each Child’s ethnicity, (i) an additional language subject under the “mother tongue” programme, i.e. Mandarin and Tamil (why not also allow option of Cantonese, Hokkien, Fu Chow, Hindi, Iban, Kadazan etc as well?) ; and (ii) a Cultural Studies for respective ethnic background, i.e. Malaysian Chinese Culture, Malaysian Indian Culture, Iban Culture, KadazanDusun Culture etc etc
For Muslims, suggest it to be Arabic as a language and Malaysian Malay Culture accordingly

Dear MYQ, certainly the national core curriculum should be taught in Bahasa Malaysia, that’s my point. The technical challenge of course is to have a national consensus as to what subjects ought to be included in this mainstream curriculum as the common foundation for all Malaysian kids – for primary and for secondary schooling. Excuse me, but I think it is quite important to give leeway for the various linguistic communities (those cultural groups who have their vested interests) to manage their own additional-but-optional-subjects curriculum. I mean let the Chinese, Indians and English-educated groups take charge of their own schools. Malaysian children of all races cannot lose from such an integrative commitment and they would be positively influenced in the direction of common citizenship and lasting friendships. Amen.
It is indeed a dilemma as there are so many hours in the day and kids also need time to play and do their own things – as it is now, their days are full what with school in the mornings, co-curriculum activities and additional / revision classes in the afternoons and tuitions in the evenings / at nights …

Today’s Sunday Star has pages and pages on the Opposition and arrows at the EC and some focus on the Malay urbanites.
The Boss of the MCA has a small pic with 3 other minor pols. How low his esteem has fallen? A full page was given to an ordinary Opposition pol with a small 4 column accompaniment on a minor aide in the Prime Minister’s Dept.
Maybe it is time for Wong Chun Wai to fulfil his real calling to set-up a RM2 church facility in PJ. I am sure it would be a great success.
After 2 General Elections the Chinese, 80% of the Malaysian Chinese have been funneled into the Opposition to no one’s surprise in a matter of 8 short years due to the incompetence, the inefficiency and the neglect of their mainstream parties, MCA and Gerakan.

Outside of China, Malaysia has the most number of different Chinese from the provinces, the clans and sub-clans. By this 3rd Generation, through emigration what Chinese, Malaysian Chinese remained have been de-tribalised like the Afro-American. Hence, the Western fringe religions are attractive which are based on the ‘feel good feeling to attract’ the masses.
Only the Mandarin speaking Chinese have a semblance of cultural and historical ballast. Unfortunately, the English speaking Chinese have mostly been de-tribalised and turned into yellow bananas – glib with their type of English and not much else.
And within this short 8 years, the sly and the cunning with the tons of money exploited these young and nubile souls to great advantage. I think a lot of readers here can attest that they have seen Hilmi and the Gimmick performing at the Ship BB 15 years ago or more, Tuesday to Sunday you could watch him dressed up the chinese judge outfit rendering a chinese song, and he would impersonate many other characters during his 3 hour show singing, crying its all about showmanship. Entertainers will do anything just as long as the $$$ is right.

Within 5 months this year, 2 of its Ministers have stressed that an academic qualification is not only the criterion for advancement but a person’s talent and ability should be also taken into account. This is a big come down from worshipping at the altar of Oxbridge and the Ivy League.
It took the Government 5 years to resolve the embarassment of October 2008 when US$108 Billions were lost and to recognise its mistake, apart from other embarassments. This is progress. Anyone without recognising mistakes cannot progress.
Then, the latest headline in the Star, Seah Chiang Nee, ‘Too many graduates’. This article emphasised on the need for new job aspirants to re-set their sights on vocational jobs, even the Singaporean PM suggested that to be a hawker is a good calling.
Singapore is already in preparation for a slowdown in the economy.
China too is facing the same problem with un-employed graduates in larger numbers, something like 6 millions. An increase in GNP of 1% will employ 1 million graduates.
The above facts are specially for those smart and urbane Malaysians below the age of 40 who voted for the Opposition and not the BN as led by the UMNO with the 14 component parties which is better experienced and equipped to give them jobs. The choice is theirs in this democratic and free country.

And anyway, the fundraising was for the church but the dinner venue was at a Chinese school.
You will not find synagogues or temples etc specified in the quran too. It is the actions of the faith. Islam is universal.

Firstly you may satisfy your query by asking the alim ulamak if you know who they are. Forget about nik aziz or hadi awang.
Secondly, pls read again my statement on the condoning of blasphemy acts. Christians blasphemy Allah by saying He has a son. Thus jesus is a son of god. Thus jesus is god. This goes against the fundamentals of islam.
Thirdly, anything goes for the creating of a monument meant for blasphemy acts in the perspectives of muslims are wrong and discouraged. Islam does not prevent christians or buddhists to built churches or temples but prohibits muslims from participating.
No harm done if fund raising is for humane reasons for the needy no matter what faith they are. It is the action seen as in hilmi in a church that christians would think islam accepts the trinity concept.
He wasn’t in a church. The event was held in a Chinese school according to WCW.
I’m sure some alim ulama (if not those from M’sia, then from other Muslim countries) would have said something about a similar situation before.
After all, Islam is more than 1,400 years old and throughout that period, lots of Muslims would have asked for clarification on lots of things.

Mungkin lebih tepat lagi kalau dikatakan dalam kes Helmi Gimmick ini “Matlamat Itu Tidak Menghalalkan Cara”. Walaupun menghibur itu adalah sumber periuk nasi beliau, tapi sumber itu secara langsung datang melalui aktiviti agama Kristian dan beliau secara tidak langsung turut membantu aktiviti tersebut. Bagi seorang Muslim, perbuatan “Syirik” dan yang bersangkutan dengannya adalah dosa besar yang tidak akan diampun oleh Allah SWT selagi seseorang Muslim itu tidak bertaubat.
