You pay peanuts, you get Anwar

And his troop.

The Selangor economic advisor who receives an RM1 salary.

Anwar-Ibrahim-Taman-Melati1

The bigger the payout, the greater the greed

The Pakatan people are putting forth the argument that if the salary of their elected representatives are not high enough, then the Aduns will possibly be tempted into corruption.

Urm, anyone remember the huge Enron scandal?

In 2000 alone, Enron’s top five executives received payments of $282.7 million. During the five-year period between 1996 and 2000, Enron paid its top five more than $500 million — see ‘Pay Madness At Enron‘ (Forbes, 22 March 2002).

Well, so much for the Pakatoon’s theory.

HannahCincin

Pakatan Aduns easily succumb to corruption, goes the logic

So how do the Pakatan bosses choose their candidates?

Aren’t the Pakatan candidates first vetted for Integrity lah, for Ethics lah, blah blah blah before they are put up to stand for election?

Or at least lah ensure they meet some basic professional competency standards.

See tweet below

Twitter - hannahyeoh- 84% soalan mulut yang dihantar

When is enough enough?

Are they telling us that if Madam Speaker is paid a mere RM6,000 a month (old rate that the previous guy collected) for occupying the chair, she may be open to soliciting a side income?

Well, that’s the line the Pakatan fanboys are arguing.

However, if Hannah Yeoh is going to be paid, say, RM9,000 a month, then they imply that she is hence less likely to be looking for extras outside (we’re taking the “peanuts-monkeys” argument incrementally).

Now, if she is given RM12,000 a month, the risk of her becoming corrupt is lessened.

And further lessened if the salary were to be raised to RM15,000.

qjs

Give her RM20,000 month to do her Madam Speaking. Aaah, now you’re talking.

Add to that amount another RM20k separately for the Adun’s basic pay and allowances, and the likelihood of the name ‘Hannah Yeoh’ becoming synonymous with Corruption (Selangor IS the richest state after all) is kept somewhat at bay.

Oh, just make it a round RM50,000 jackpot, and the Pakatan exco member is seemingly secured.

Well now you all know how their CAT system operates. For a spirited defence of Anwar vis-a-vis the Selangor pay hike, please read the readers’ comments @ http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/248314

  1. i think she might using google translate for translating “oral question” into soalan mulut.

  2. Madam “don’t-envy-my-salary-is-high” Speaker says:

“Surely if you pay peanuts …

Soalan mulut akan dijawab dengan jawapan dubur.”

  3. Btw Helen, some of these terms are being used officially, just like how we think all branches should be cawangan, but many of them use ranting.

    Just to let you know.

  4. Ms H. According to the brilliant Lee Kuan Yew with his 12 failed Policies for Singapore which is the spiritual leader and spiritual home of the Singaporean Trojan Horse DAP, the higher the politicians salaries are, the cleaner the Government. No corruption. You get the best for the job. How come there are 12 failed Policies ?

    1. I am curious.

Just what are these “12 failed policies” of LKY?

Singapore seems to be doing reasonably ok, vide

      (1) triple-A ratings from all 3 rating agencies (Fitch, Moody’s, S & P).

      (2) rock-solid Singapore Dollar.

      (3) 3rd largest wealth management centre in the world.

      (4) 1 of 3 hubs for Yuan-denominated transactions (the others are Hong Kong and London)

      (5) home to some of the strongest banks (DBS, OCBC, UOB) in the world.

      (6) by far the largest recipient, in Asean, of FDI from the EU and US.

      (7) home to 2 of the largest sovereign wealth funds.

      (8) one of the largest oil refining, trading and petrochemicals centres in the world.

      (9) an airline, airport and sea port that are continuously ranked among the best in the world. I

      (10) a steady recipient of the “brain drain” from Malaysia.

      (11) a country whose “Ilo Ilo” movie is doing better internationally than a certain “Tanda Putera” offering

And last, but by no means least

      (12) a judiciary and a courts system that is ranked among the best in the world.

That’s 12 points for you to rebut. If you can.

Only b’cos Hannah Yeoh is in the news ,D

I’m trying hard to discipline myself to stop writing.

  5. Helen,

Maka lagi meruncing lah politik benci mereka.

“By arrogating such an obscene pay increase to the MB, Speaker and other state representatives – ranging from 100 to 370 per cent – the Pakatan Rakyat-run Selangor state government has taken the peoples’ goodwill for granted and betrayed the principles they have claimed to uphold as ethical representatives of the people.” — Dr Kua Kia Soong

  6. Minimum wage for all elected State Assembly persons (see, I am being gender-neutral here), all State Exco members, all Chief Ministers and Mentri Besars, all MPs, all Ministers, the DPM and the PM?

If the hoi polloi can make do with a minimum wage, how much so for the best and brightest among us from whose ranks come our elected representatives in the State Assemblies and Parliament?

Maybe Lee Kuan Yew was on to something here when he instituted the policy of pegging civil service, judges and ministerial salaries to remuneration in Singapore’s private sector.

Better qualified people, a leaner bureaucracy, a smaller and more efficient Cabinet – what’s not to like?

And if you have to convince the electorate of your worthiness every five years or so, then that’s as good a test as any.

    1. Shahrir suggests using the GDP as an index so that the Aduns are not too distanced from the people they are purported to serve, see http://www.theedgemalaysia.com/political-news/265956-shahrir-suggests-use-of-index-as-yardstick-for-salary-hike.html

As for matching the private sector, well, businesses generate profits and make their own money. Aduns do not. They employer COLLECTS its income by force of law.

If businesses fail to make annual profits and sustain heavy losses, the employees may have to take a paycut. Some may be retrenched.

Aduns don’t have to worry whether the S’gor gomen is profitable or not.

CEOs have professional expertise. The most significant thing that Madam Speaker does is tweet 24/7 and wail about her “2 babies’s toys”. How does this match the performance-driven private sector?

And if we’re talking about bringing professionalism into the job, imagine holding the Speaker’s post and using the term “soalan mulut” for oral question. Malu nya!

      1. ‘Soalan mulut’? Eeeee, malunya! BM dapat berapa masa SPM dulu? Merit-nya la taraf BM Puan Speaker nih.

I bet even all the kucing kuraps yg kerja kat DUN Selangor tu pun tahu frasa ‘soalan lisan’ and not ‘soalan mulut’. Nasib baik ‘high class politician’ macam Puan Speaker ni tweet saja, sebab kalau dia cakap macam tu depan Regina Lee, for sure Regina dah label Puan Speaker as ‘dumb-fuck’. Wakakakaka!

    2. Re Better qualified people, a leaner bureaucracy, a smaller and more efficient Cabinet – what’s not to like?

The Speaker is not getting leaner. She’s getting bloated. I wonder how much she weights nowadays ?

    3. No! you can’t run the government based on an economic corporate model. You’ll inevitably lose sight of non-economic factors in the good governance of human society.

There’s more to intelligence than intellectual property rights, just as the human spirit is not circumscribed by production and consumerism business psychology, to illustrate. Any wonder that Singapore has the world’s lowest fertility rate, per woman. Now how do you peg the solution for this anomalous sapiential behaviour to the salary of the governing policy maker?

      1. Why single out Singapore? It’s the same in the other developed economies – US, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan – besides Singapore.

Simply put, when you have a well-educated female workforce, most of them will not be content staying home and having babies!

So, it’s not “anomalous sapiential behaviour”, but a rational response to changing times.

  7. Hi Helen, do check out my tweets @jasonleong to @hannahyeoh re the pay hike. She has remained silent and has not gone on record yet though challenged to do so.

  8. Sorry- this is the corrected version. Nothing to be afraid of if one is on the side of truth. I just want the unvarnished truth and Hannah Yeoh’s position on it – no spin and no putar belit; nothing personal.

This is about walking the talk and practising what one preaches. This is about justice, fairness, good government, good govenance and accountability which has been the rallying cry and cause of so many christian leaders and christians.

This is also now a national issue. Christians must go on public record and be unafraid to say it as it is – nothing to hide, totally transparent.

    1. They will putar-belit and claim that anyone questioning Madam Speaker is “jealous” of Hannah Yeoh.

      null

  9. If Big Boss Mr CM says “pecah undang2” (break the law, guess they use google Xlate) in his comment on Candi Issue, what u expect from Madam Speaker. how they used arabic term like mother tougue eg. Allah, Amal makuf nahi mungkar’ iftar and such. They are ‘floaters’ lost in between in sky and earth. Do not have own identity.

    1. re: “Do not have own identity.”

Chameleons. That’s why the Firsters have been defaming Hindraf. Because Hindraf wants to stick to their Hindu and Indian (predominantly Tamil) identity. So the Firsters demonize Hindraf as “racists”.

  10. So funny this first lady of Selangor..

Just imagine her BM version on “to table a motion”.. LOL
