JAIS raid: Is it true that minority can bully the majority?

One reader ‘Prometheus’ commented sceptically @ 2014/01/03 at 3:27 pm:

“If these ‘DAPsters’ have the clout to impose a ‘siege mentality’ on a majority community that is buttressed by special privileges and rights, then something is wrong somewhere.”

To paraphrase in plainer English:

How can it be possible for Malaysia’s Muslim majority to feel that they are being pushed with their back against the wall by Dapsters when the Malay race (all Muslim) are protected by special rights? If it’s true that this can happen, then something is wrong somewhere.

Let’s address Prometheus’ challenge.

‘They’ like to repeat that Christians are only 9 percent while Chinese form a mere quarter of the country’s total population. Since both groups are smaller in number than the Muslims and the Malays, their argument goes that it is quite impossible for a minority to bully the majority.

So the question for you – if you’re a Muslim or/and a Malay – reading this: Do you feel bullied?

But first read a Malaysiakini article I’m recommending and then we’ll discuss further below.

I’m copypasting a freshly published article headlined ‘Najib shouldn’t remain mum, says S’wak DAP chief‘.

It reports on a press conference today by Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen. The population of Sarawak is roughly 43 percent Christian.

Quote, Malaysiakini article in full:

<starts> Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak remaining mum on the raid and seizure of 300 Malay and Iban versions of the Bible yesterday by Selangor Islamic authorities (JAIS) is an indication of his endorsement of a move to divert the people’s attention from the series of policies he had implemented.
.
“Silence does not mean golden for Najib at this moment,” said Chong Chieng Jen, Sarawak DAP chief at a media conference to day.
.
“He cannot remain silent; he must state his stand clearly and not allow this controversy deteriorate any longer.
.
“Silence on his part means an endorsement by him to allow Umno to continue to play on racial and religious conflicts,” said Chong, MP for Bandar Kuching and State Assemblyperson for Kota Sentosa.
.
Selangor Islamic authorities yesterday raided the Bible Society of Malaysia and seized 300 copies of Bahasa Malaysia and Iban versions of the bible as they contained the word Allah.
.
He said the Catholic Herald the controversy over the use of the word Allah by the  had been triggered by Umno branches in Peninsular Malaysia and JAIS.
.
Chong added that the raid was a typical Umno move to divert the people’s attention from  a series of policies Najib had implemented, resulting in the prices of daily goods, petrol, electricity, and others escalating.
.
Playing the same old song
.
“This is a ploy by Umno to play on racial and religious sentiments when they see that the people are against these policies,” he said, urging for calmness to prevail.
.
However, Chong was quick to add that “remaining calm does not mean we must give in to unreasonable demands by the Umno-orchestrated campaign against other religions.
.
“We must remain calm and firm and the rakyat must be focused  on the economic policy of the Barisan Nasional.
.
“Do not be diverted by the ploys of the Umno to stir up racial sentiments,” he added.
.
On the demand by certain Umno leaders for those who did not like BN policies to leave Malaysia, Chong jabbed back at them, saying that  53% of people voted against Umno/BN and did not like their policies.
.
“Is Umno asking all these 53% of the people to migrate?
.
“This country does not belong to Umno; it belongs to every one of us,” he said, pointing out that Najib is not only the president of Umno, but also prime minister of Malaysia.
.
On the proposed protest by Umno and its racist wings on January 10, Chong asked Najib to interfere in order to prevent the controversy from getting worse.
.
“I know a lot of Sarawak’s Christians are angry. Even non-Christians are also angry. But let not anger take the better of us,” he added. <ends>
.

“Siege mentality”

The operative word is “siege mentality”. Commenter ‘Prometheus’ finds it far-fetched that Malay Muslims can really feel they are being besieged by the non-Malay Christians given the fact that the majority community are protected by special rights as well as by the various arms of government.

Let’s use the Malaysiakini article above (reporting on the stance by Sarawak-DAP) as our point of reference.

(1) Sarawak-DAP issues a challenge to Najib Razak on the Jais raid. Najib and Umno are accused of continuing “to play on racial and religious conflicts” and allowing the “controversy [to] deteriorate”. In other words, it’s all Umno’s fault — the EBU attack.

Do you think that the PM is here being put under siege?

(2) Sarawak-DAP insists “controversy over the use of the word Allah by the Christians had been triggered by Umno branches in Peninsular Malaysia and Jais”.

Again it’s all the Malay-Muslim’s fault. The Christians are faultless, according to the opposition.

Do you think that Umno is here being put under siege?

(3) Sarawak-DAP claims that the Jais raid is “a typical Umno move to divert the people’s attention from a series of [bad] policies” by Najib resulting in price hikes as well as “a ploy by Umno to play on racial and religious sentiments”.

Jais is a Selangor agency. Selangor is a state ruled by Pakatan. Yet Sarawak-DAP is blaming Najib and Umno for the raid by Jais.

Do you think that Najib and Umno are here being put under siege?

(4) Sarawak-DAP frames the Jais raid as “unreasonable demands by the Umno-orchestrated campaign against other religions”.

Again, I repeat, Jais is a Selangor agency. And here is Sarawak-DAP inciting the public that the seizure is an “Umno-orchestrated campaign against other religions”.

Do you think that Umno is here being put under siege?

(5) Sarawak-DAP then asks Najib to step in and prevent “the proposed protest by Umno and its racist wings on January 10”.

On top of religious tyranny, Umno is accused of racism.

Do you think that Umno is here being put under siege?

(6) Sarawak-DAP declares: “a lot of Sarawak’s Christians are angry. Even non-Christians are also angry. But let not anger take the better of us”.

They are playing the helpless and defenceless victim.

They are posturing as the ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ (despite the big, bad neighbours’ cruelty) type of Christians. They are posturing that despite feeling angry over the Jais raid, they’re peacefully turning the other cheek.

Do you think that Umno is here being put under siege?

Throughout the half dozen questions above, I’ve used the term “Umno”. However the party’s 3.5 million members are Malay.

Hence it’s fair to also put the question across as ‘Do you think that a lot of Malays are here being put under siege?’

Back to Prometheus’ question

Prometheus is bewildered as to why the Malay-Muslims who are the majority in Malaysia have this “siege mentality”.

I had earlier replied to Prometheus that the Arabs, who allow their Christians to use the ‘Allah’ word, do not share this same siege mentality because the Arab countries do not have Dapsters like ours.

It takes two to tango. Malays are blamed for having a siege mentality. How come nobody asks WHO is causing them to feel besieged?

Are the reasons for the Malays to feel under siege valid ones or only a figment of their imagination? Are Dapsters simply a bunch of harmless folks who have a great love for their neighbours and now being bullied by the Islamic authorities?

If so, the Dapsters have just cause to be angry at the “interference” into their Christian affairs while at the same time the Malays have wronged the evangelistas by selfishly not allowing them to use the ‘Allah’ word.

If Prometheus is correct, then it is the Umno Malays who are perpetually hysterical and quite delusional actually.

  2. Ms H. As I always said that as long as the BN as led by the UMNO with the 13 component parties observes the rule of the laws, implements fair and transparent policies, maintains a functioning and normal bureacracy and eschews from using the GLCs to make money and only focus on ruling over us, there is nothing much the Opposition can do until the next 14th General Elections.

    1. re: “BN as led by the UMNO with the 13 component parties”

      Uncle,

Some of the component parties are the walking dead.

      1. Ms H. The 13 component parties are listed as official. These maybe replaced anytime by the Singaporean Trojan Horse DAP, the very rich PKR and the pious PAS. No problem.

        1. Ms H. This is why I always said our brand of democracy is unique, the Malaysian brand of Democracy which has shown to be resilient and durable. And we have come a long way too – 57 years to be exact !

      1. Ms H. Also please do not forget, a leader in the Opposition began in his youth carrying the bag of the brilliant Lee Kuan Yew with his 13 failed Policies for Singapore and is now a happy grand-father with his successful son the Chief Boss of a major State and his grandson going to Cambridge on the brilliant Lee’s personal recommendation. Want more do you want ??? And in the face of RACISM ??? How ? Please teach us how ?

    2. As I always said that as long as ……bla bla bla

  3. I can’t speak on behalf of UMNO and/or Muslims but personally, I’m not.

    BUT…

Even if they’re not, the kind of provocation the evangelists and DAP are doing, with all their chest-thumping and holier-than-thou arrogant attitudes, they really have no choice but to stand their ground and speak up.

Now if it’s regarded as being mentality sieged, then I guess they’ll take it. It’s time someone, somewhere tell themselves enough is enough.

As for Sarawak, what the DAP chief is total bull. They’re just trying to get the natives all ruled but the majority still thinks it’s a Malayan issue. My state is the same.

The toxic that DAP brings wherever it goes has to be stopped. In the East, we’re still ok but the Chinese and Christians in Malaya have bought their polarizing ideologies lock, stock and barrel.

If I were the PM, I’ll issue a release and say, “look, religion is mostly a State issue. You have 2/3 majority in the Selangor assembly, do something if y’all want: amend the state law if y’all are not happy. Why pass the buck to me when you have the power to do something about it, instead if just bitching and whining, and claiming persecution?”

In all honestly, the vernacubengs will reap the hatred they sowed, sooner or later.

Oh, Helen, is it possible for you to include a linker in your articles so that we can link it to our twitter, FB and what not?

    Thanks

    1. re: “Oh, Helen, is it possible for you to include a linker in your articles so that we can link it to our twitter, FB and what not?”

Urm, at the bottom of every article got – “Share this” – accompanied by the FB, Twitter, etc icons. Can you see them on your screen?

      1. Ah, my bad.

Now I see it. Sorry, I’m more an app icon kinda dude, I look for icons lol

You are right. Now let us see if the Enactment will be amended. The intention is already here.

      1. We wait and see.. I do feel that’s ‘intention’ will keep staying as an intention.. DAP only know how to talk big..

  4. this stupid chong is shooting the wrong guy. he should address khalid as the person in charge of state affairs including islam. but as usual, pakatan love to misled the majority naive rakyat into believing everything should be burdened on the shoulder of umno bn. wait until they control the federal (Allah forbid) they will continue doing that. it seems pakatan is enjoying power and money without responsibility, thanks to their stupid majority voters.

    1. re: “it seems pakatan is enjoying power and money without responsibility, thanks to their stupid majority voters”

What you say is very scary but true! BN voters are now the “stupid” minority and Pakatan voters the “knowledgeable”, “well-informed”, “thinking” majority.

BN is only in power due to the rural weightage and how the seats are distributed.

      1. it seems pakatan is enjoying power and money without responsibility, thanks to their stupid majority voters”

The voters with high education and high disposable income. This is the 2020 generation. Scary!

        1. Also tech-savvy.

BN is very shaky for GE14 because digital communication is on the up and up, and r=the next election will see a lot of young voters.

Goody. The Dapsters can claim pribumi status in something at least.

              1. haha Ms Helen, a newly form natives mid 1990. another convertion for many. Scary, these new native originated from espionage and war peripherals.

  5. The Malays may be big in numbers but we don’t seem to have the VOICE and I blame that on the Umno reps. I really don’t know what they are doing. I’ve only seen Hishammuddin commenting on the JAIS issue today. Where are the voices of Umno, Wanita, PEMUDA, Puteri, semuanya cuti memanjang ke, tak habis lagi celebrate new year?

Since we Melayu are the majority, we shouldn’t feel besieged but we seemed to have been pushed to a tight corner that we seem only able to (barely) put up a defense. Because the Malays have been the administration since Merdeka and believing in the concept of bertolak-ansur, so the administration has been very tolerant on a lot of issues and for a long time that tolerance was reciprocated. There was goodwill among the different races.

But the abolishment of ISA and the way the administration has behaved in the past 10 years, menagihkan undi Cina ke tahap sanggup mati anak, maka Dapsters pun took advantage dan asakan demi asakan di jalankan oleh mereka hingga ke tahap sekarang.

So to the administration, sementara nasi belum jadi bubur ni, pull up your pants and loose the grins when dealing with the dapsters and evangelists and start putting your collective foot down.

      1. Helen,

Exactly. Malays are riled up actually. But whatever anger they have or legitimate concerns have consistently been downplayed even by UMNO itself.

While Malays felt like crucifying Namawee, Nazri boldly accepted him in Parliament and in the process sending wrong message that rude Chinese have UMNO’s patronage.

While Malay are angry when UMNO was accused by PKR of engineering Lahad Datu incident, they found that none of UMNO who’s who can bring the useless politician slandering UMNO to face the wrath of justice.

While Malays are upset that Guan Eng and DAP continuos slandering of UMNO, Malays, Najib coolly joked with Guan Eng as if he has no feeling at all.

    1. I don’t think the government supporters should make too much noise about JAIS action. If they were to interfere , the Selangor state government will dust off their hands and be happy that the burden is now on Federal Gov’s shoulder.

Let the Selangor Gov led by DAP PAS and PKR solve this. I am very interested to see how they would wiggle their way out of this. This is actually a good exercise for them to show their ‘superior intellect’ of how to govern a multiracial and multireligious community.

The government supporters should just back JAIS in silent.

  6. Since jais is under the purview of the state, shouldnt the mb be answering the evangelistas.

Agree with urb that if federal govt were to say anything, it will be used against them.

Let selangor deal with the problem.

    Urb 👍👍👍👍

  7. To Christians backed up Dapsters – lordliness/arrogance – like the S300L. What to expect…. manipulation of facts !

As if nobody knows…playing with fire !

  8. Siege mentality or whatever crap,

    My advice is:-
Don’t bring this commotion to Penang. Intelectualities and rationals are put aside when it comes to this:

Even with the huge influx of chinese from other states outnumbering the Malays , the Penang Malays are like a time-bomb waiting to explode.

    1. There’s a reason for that time-bomb waiting to explode syndrome. It’s not just the Penang Malays. In case you’ve not been aware of your surroundings, it’s actually all Malays throughout the semenanjung.

      1. Orangkampung,

It’s impossible to get through to them to warn them to stop their slandering and other behaviour (like this bullying discussed in the article above).

On the other hand, they see themselves as the innocent victims whose God-given right to use ‘Allah’ or any damn word they please is being forcibly taken away from them and I’m taking here about the peninsula minorities who despise the national language.

        What to do?

When I caution them, I’m mocked as the proverbial vagrant standing in the street corner shouting “Doom” holding a placard saying “The end of the world is near”.

  9. I wonder why the JAIS never raid the Silk temple since they use Allah as well which is suppose to be forbidden to them. JAIS seems to discriminate against and bullying Christian.

      1. So they got raided is not because of “Allah” but they are against the Malay? This is not a religious issue but rather a racial conflict?

    1. Well, it is only a matter of time. Once they get bored of Christian bashing, they might set their sights on the next available scapegoat.

      1. You keep whining about “Christian bashing” like you’re the eternal victims. So everything is 100 percent Isma’s fault and the evangelistas are merely peaceful, poor innocent lambs?

        1. When you have nonsense such as ‘Malaysia Negara Kristian?’ printed in their media, conspiracies about solar powered talking bibles, then yes, it is bashing.

          1. Oh come on lah, don’t exaggerate the outrage. There are battery-powered ‘talking’ Qurans sold in Malaysia. So why not “solar powered talking bibles”. It’s not like it is a fictitious product.

            1. Do you seriously think a solar powered talking bible can cause mass apostasy among Malaysian Muslims?

Perhaps we should get the SKMM to ban computer tablets and smartphones since the Bible is readily available from Google Play and iTunes?

              1. It is this sneaky deliberate mischaracterization (taking Hasan Ali out of context) that you and your friends are fond of doing which makes people angry.

e.g. on this thread you wrote @ https://helenang.wordpress.com/2013/12/31/2013-year-of-the-iguana-eng/#comment-65322,

“What would you like to discuss next? The likelihood of Bruce Willis being sent into space to destroy a meteor?”

It is a similar mockery. You mock my example of the movie Olympus Has Fallen where I said Morgan Freeman playing the Speaker of the House becomes the acting president — to illustrate that according to protocol the Speaker takes over if the President (and his VP) become incapacitated.

Now try to refute this order of precedence if you can. Fight with facts.

Instead what you sneakily do is suggest that movies get things (and history) wrong. Fine. Movies do make mistakes. However the link you provided says nothing at all about Olympus Has Fallen and that it is incorrect to suggest that the Speaker would take charge if the Prez was KO-ed.

Why insert a link that doesn’t rebut my contention? It is this sneaky side-stepping that makes you Dapsters the slimeballs that you are.

And you put the icing on your cake with the belittling remark, “What would you like to discuss next? The likelihood of Bruce Willis being sent into space to destroy a meteor?”

AGAIN, let me repeat. It is this kind of behaviour you (Dapsters) are displaying which makes people (Malays) very angry at your kind (Cina DAP).

If you are able to correct our mistakes factually, we would accept the correction and rectify the error.

But when you do things like pulling this “movie mistakes” stunt, you are earning nothing but our contempt and disgust.

                1. “It is this sneaky deliberate mischaracterization (taking Hasan Ali out of context) that you and your friends are fond of doing which makes people angry.”

Hassan Ali alleged that solar powered talking bibles were being used in the conspiracy to apostatise Muslims without any evidence. Till today, we have yet to see any follow-up evidence on his claims.

And here you go again, bringing up a Hollywood film to prove your point, but failing to notice that: a) this is a fictional film, and b) this is the United States of America, which has a different government setup than Malaysia. Speaking of side-stepping, you did notice the article I posted about a case of an Exco becoming Acting Menteri Besar of Selangor, didn’t you? He was not the Speaker by the way.

Here is it if you have forgotten:

New Straits Times, 12 September 1989

                  ‘Sujak Appointed Acting MB’

Selangor State Executive Councillor for local government and housing Datuk Abu Sujak Mahmud was today appointed acting Menteri Besar by the Sultan of Selangor.’

So, what are the odds of Bruce Willis being given a space ride to destroy a meteor?

                  1. The ‘cracked’ url (movie mistakes) link that you provided did not reference Olympus at all. Furthermore, the fact that the Speaker takes over, in the event that the Prez and his VP are knocked out, is not refuted.

Hasan Ali said that dakwah is taking place.

I agree that he should furnish the proof. I’ve blogged about his too. I wrote that Zul Noordin, Ustaz Nasha and their ilk (I mentioned Dr Hasan by name) should pursue the matter by bringing forth the evidence. So in this matter, you and are not in disagreement.

However you are trying to ridicule Hasan Ali for mentioning “solar powered bibles”. He said it was one of the novelties to attract interest. I don’t see anything illogical about it. One might bribe a child with a novelty toy to entice him to look at a science kit.

The problem with you Dapsters is you all like to ridicule people.

                    1. Re: I agree that he should furnish the proof. I’ve blogged about his too. I wrote that Zul Noordin, Ustaz Nasha and their ilk (I mentioned Dr Hasan by name) should pursue the matter by bringing forth the evidence.

Any evidence forwarded by them? Otherwise, it is merely hearsay.

                  2. “The ‘cracked’ url (movie mistakes) link that you provided did not reference Olympus at all. Furthermore, the fact that the Speaker takes over, in the event that the Prez and his VP are knocked out, is not refuted.”

That highly unlikely scenario may be relevant to the United States, which has a different government system than Malaysia and the state of Selangor.

For Selangor, there has been a case where the Acting Menteri Besar was conferred upon an executive councillor, and he was not the state Speaker.

The main point is Hassan Ali has not proven his allegations until today, including that hilarious solar powered talking bible accusation. The device exists, but there has not been any proof submitted to show its use in apostatising Muslims in Malaysia, what more its effectiveness. I would say the various Bible apps one can download from iTunes would be a graver ‘threat’.

        2. Re:’ like you’re the eternal victims’

Actually this AC-DC is really a victim.. victim of DAPster’s manipulation.
