Malah tanahair sebenarnya “zero Chinese”, menurut kata Hannah Yeoh.

Twitterhannahyeoh20CEC

Twitter - roketkini- Hannah Yeoh cadang ruangan

  1. BRAVA Helen, and what a great post to start your Chinese New Year. Berdesing telinga sesiapa yang berkenaan membacanya.

    Wishing you and your family,

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Xin Nian Kuai Le

    1. Yes , Happy Chinese New Year to Kak Helen, and this first day being a Friday is an auspicious occasion, so here is a Friday sermon offering from the pulpit of Cambridge Mosque:

“Say: by the grace of Allah and His mercy, let them rejoice in that, it is better than all that they gather.” [Yunus: 58]
Rejoice in what? What is being gathered? How is it better?
May Allah grant us the grace to follow in the Prophet’s footsteps, to receive some of his wisdom and understanding and thus heal our lonely or broken hearts.

      {once in the site, pls. click to listen to this 20 min. sermon}

  2. Another example of DAP’s cakap tak serupa bikin.

    1. HAIL HELEN!

THE RAPIER AT THE DAWN OF THE CHINESE NEW YEAR OF THE HORSE.

“Behold the pale horse. The man who sat on him is Death… (for DAP) and Hell followed with him”.
(Bagi gempaq sikit … Or Me? Tor For?)

  3. Then when it was not allowed, why registered as Chinese not Indian, why denying the rights of the father.

Hypocrite at the highest level, belittling the father’s race.

    Wishing you and your family,

Gong Xi Fa Cai! Xin Nian Kuai Le
(tq LOL, I copy paste) I always thought it was “sing ning kwai le”

      1. Actually Mdm Speaker sendiri memandang rendah kpd KAUM INDIA. itu shj. Sebab itu dia malu anaknya berbangsakan India seperti bapanya. Tak usahlah nak main tarik tali. dasar hipokrit.

        1. To be frank it is to facilitate their overseas travel.. kalau ade word ‘Malay” keluaq masuk negara luar licin dan beres..

When I was younger, travelling alone I just breeze in at immigration check whereas few Chinese Malaysian single ladies were taken to a room for god-knows what search. It was in Hongkong and Japan.

My Chinese maid was working illegally in London (2yrs) and again trying to go back there. Tak serik tak takut.. this time katanya the organizer will take them melalui Ireland.

My Apek neighbour’s doter dah 10yrs hopping around working illegally fm Australia and NewZealand. Siap ade kereta lagi kat sana. Bila mak dia telepon bila nak balik Malaysia, katanya tunggu sampai pihak immigration catch her first.

Chinese and Indians the world over are doing the same tak kira le mereka dari Negara mana. So to exclude the ‘race’ from their passport is very crucial..

          1. The phenomenon 跳飞机 might be unique to Malaysian Chinese and it is all Umno’s fault.

Kata Anak Malaysia, hehehe.

Gong Xi Fa Cai, Sis Helen! :)

      1. Helen,

sebelum saya proceed…. nak juga saya wish you a happy and prosperous chinese new year….
take your rest and have a good time with your dearest.

        sekali lagi…happy new year!

        1. Kamu tak celebrate ke Alwie? It is a cultural tradition.. if you do I wish you Gong Xi Fa Cai! Xin Nian Kuai Le

    1. ROTFL

Good idea. No more celebration of CNY and Deepavali. On 31 Aug and 16 Sept festival days.

        1. You’re a broken record continually playing the same old tune. And still stalking my blog even on CNY. Go distribute some ang pows to the needy, will ya.

    2. Mulan,

Wishing you and your family Gong Xi Fa Cai! Xin Nian Kuai Le

Change your resolution – blog even more

  8. anyway, Happy Chinese New Year, Selamat Tahun Baru and Gong Xi Fatt Chai to Helen and Malaysian Chinese.

    1. I’ve never realised what a serious affair kangkung is. Everyone on that pic looked real uptight. Someone should tell them kangkung when discussed they get nothing, but if consumed they might get enough fibre to loosen up.

  9. Helen,
Selamat menyambut Tahun Baru Cina. Gembira selalu.

    1. Noooo-oo-o, after this will discipline myself to limit time spent in blogosphere. Must read more books for work.

  10. The title of your post ni very funny .. and yet straight to the point. Hahaha bila bab-bab nak cuti umum or cuti perayaan .. bangsa Malaysia belakang kira. I doubt your BFF (Hanna Banana) will fight for no public holiday for racial celebrations… only public holiday for Independence Day, Malaysia Day, FT Day, Agong’s Birthday, New Year and Workers Day. 6 days!

WOW! Finally.. the foreigners will no longer ridicule the numbers of public holidays we have here! Note: My boss (gwailo) always complain that we have too many.. besides my boss I heard many other gwailos also complain. I think they are jealous ;)

    Happy Chinese New Year Helen!

  11. Hannah is actually a banana, yellow outside white inside. no celebrate cny

Also, gong xi fa chai Helen

  12. Helen,

When I was a kid (I am 60 now), Malaysian Chinese celebrated Kong Hee Fatt Choi. Now it’s Gong Xi Fa Cai. Their names have also changed over the years. My friends used to have names like Wong Kok Foo, Chow Chee Keong etc. Now they have mostly opted for Mandarin names. Why? I thought they want to preserve their culture, mother tongue i,e, Cantonese, Hokien etc. Did their forefathers who came to Tanah Melayu speak Mandarin? I am confused. Can somebody explain.

    1. Uncle Tan you are right, Kong Hee Fatt Choi to you, I too wonder why it changed, is it due to spelling error. Still cant forget Soh Chin Aun aka taukey very synonym and Malaysia live happily.

    2. Uncle T,

Most Chinese younger generation + the OLD DINASOUR DAPster are hypocrite. why SJKC teach Mandarin, why dont Cantonese? I fully agreed with your statement. And now the chinese are busy changing their name to Mat Saleh’s name. More stylish meh.. And another round of preserving culture? Why dont change to Aminah, Tijah? Sounds more malaySIAN?

    3. Well whaddaya know, coincidently, I did wished Helen the old school traditional way. I thought I was old fasioned, it actually is the preferred line to be wished.

    4. Dear Uncle T – back in the day, Cantonese was more prevalent in print (i.e. using “Kong Hei Fatt Choy”) probably because the lingua franca dialect of the urban centres of KL and Ipoh was Cantonese. I guess, eventually, to be fair to other dialect groups like the Hokkiens and so on, Mandarin began to be used since that was the medium of instruction for the Chinese educated.

Just an FYI, Mandarin is also a dialect, albeit a Northern one whereas almost all M’sian Chinese are from Southern China, but since it is used in education – it has become the standard i.e. putonghua “the common language”. It is the same situation in South Korea where the Seoul accent is considered standard, and in Bahasa Malaysia where the Johor-Riau accent is used as the standard (not withstanding the thankfully shortlived Bahasa Baku era… so painful to listen to)

As for the names evolving to have more Z’s and X’s in them, that is a function of 2 factors: 1) less stickiness to clan & dialect identity due to intermarriage and 2) education in Mandarin medium.

As to why Mandarin is used as the medium of instruction, after the splinter and eventual fall of the Song Dynasty about 900 years ago, the subsequent dynasties had their centre of government in Beijing (or Peking, if you prefer); hence the northern dialect became the standard.

But this is considered a fairly “recent” development when taken into context of the evolution of language usage where the prevalent and influential dialects were, for a very long time, the central and southern dialects of China. For example, the pronunciation of borrowed Chinese words in Japanese and Korean sound a lot more like these dialects, and not like Mandarin at all.

In summary to your question: our forefathers came speaking in different dialects, the literate ones may be spoken in dialects but read in Mandarin. As dialect identify and usage fades, Mandarin becomes the standard.

by the way, is “juadah” now the standard used for ‘makanan’ or ‘hidangan’? I always thought it only meant the special food for breaking fast (oh yeah, iftar, not buka puasa any more, hor?) but the pilot on an MAS flight said, “… harap menikmati juadah yang di hidangkan..” anyway, there you go, language evolves over time, whaddyagonnado’boutit? ;)

  13. he..he… helen tembak siapa ? hannah yeoh nak tipu melayu, geromal india dan kelentong cina… kalau tak buat tu, bukan cina nama nya….

Bila melayu suruh mereka balik, kata melayu rasis pula… berlindung balik lalang sehelai…
Kenapa cina suka tipu diri sendiri ?

  14. Helen,

Happy New Year.. Wish you & family a Happy and Prosperous Chinese New Year….

‘Makan besar’ @ in law house.. tradition that I will keep for my family.

  15. DAP abuses festivals and holidays for their own purposes anyway. [YouTube:
Teresa Kok “Onederful” Malaysia CNY 2014 Video Clip]

And they say it’s satire. I guess when others call them pigs I could invoke Animal Farm then. How’s that for satire.

Wishing a prosperous and peaceful new year to you too.

  16. wishing you & your beloved ones “kong hee huat chai”. happy galloping or slowing down…. i will respect your decision. cheers!

  17. Hi hanna yeo…how is your Indian daughter’s doing ?

GONG XI FA CAI to Helen.
May the year of the horse bring you good health, peace and prosperity!

Tapi apa sekalipun jgn lupa jaga kesihatan tu.

  19. Gong Xi Fa Cai Helen!

One question to you…Does the Anak Bangsa Malaysia celebrate CNY ?

    1. Thanks Calvin.

The Anak Bangsa Malaysia celebrate their festive holidays on 7 June (Agong’s birthday this year), Aug 31 (Merdeka day) and Sept 16 (Malaysia day).

There are NO CHINESE, only Malaysians.

  20. Thought so.

BTW Check out Mama Bangsa Malaysia on Twitter happily celebrating the CNY.

    1. Aaah, the hypocrisy of the twits never ceases to amaze. Next they’ll include CNY on the UBAH-ed evangelical liturgical calendar.
