Assoc. Prof. Dr Aznan Hasan who is the chairman of Isma’s Ulama Council asked ‘Di manakah salahnya penganjuran seminar di UiTM?’ (Isma website, 17 May 2014)
The UiTM seminar on Christianization has been subjected to volley after volley of attack from The Malaysian Insider which had principally fanned “the outcry over the seminar” and goaded for it to become classified as a police case.
Latest is TMI‘s report yesterday headlined ‘Anti-Christian seminar too hot a potato for Selangor Islamic council‘.
My question is simple. MAIS distributed its booklet ‘Pendedahan Agenda Kristian’ to the seminar participants. Among other things, the booklet cited dozens of ayat from the Quran as well as the Hadith.
Below are four sample verses among the dozens featured in the MAIS booklet in its first chapter ‘Dalil-dalil nas tentang sikap sebenar Kristian’.
MAIS quoted surah Al-Baqarah, verse 140 and interpreted it as:
“Penegasan Allah tentang sikap sikap Yahudi dan Nasrani yang menyembunyikan keterangan sebenar serta usaha mereka untuk memutar belit fakta dan bukti demi menyesatkan manusia.”
2:140 “Or do ye say that Abraham and Ismail and Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes were Jews or Christians? Say: Do ye know better than Allah ?” Ah! who is more unjust than those who conceal the testimony they have from Allah? But Allah is not unmindful of what ye do!’
MAIS quoted surah Ali Imran, verses 110 & 111 and interpreted it as:
“Penegasan Allah tentang sikap Yahudi dan Nasrani yang sentiasa mengejek dan membuat tuduhan tidak berasas yang menjejaskan kesucian agama Islam.”
3:110 “Ye are the best of Peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them. For among are some who have faith but most of them are perverted transgressors.
3:111 They will do you no harm you, barring a trifling annoyance; If they come out to fight you, they will show you their backs, and no help shall they get.”
MAIS quoted surah Al-Maidah, verse 18 and interpreted it as:
“Penegasan Allah tentang sikap ego dan menunjuk-nunjuk golongan Yahudi dan Nasrani yang merasakan diri mereka sebagai kelompok terpilih yang lebih baik berbanding manusia lain.”
5:18 “[Both] the Jews and the Christians say, “We are the sons of Allah, and His beloved.” Say, “Why then doth He punish you for your sins?” Nay, ye are but men He hath created: He forgiveth whom He pleaseth, and He punisheth whom He pleaseth. And to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between: And to Him is the final goal (of all).”
MAIS also quoted the well known surah Al-Baqarah, verse 120 and interpreted it as:
“Penegasan Allah tentang sikap dendam golongan Yahudi dan Nasrani yang selama-lamanya tidak akan redha dengan Islam dan umatnya selagi tidak berada di bawah telunjuk mereka”.
2:120 “Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion.”

The position taken by Isma is ‘Di manakah salahnya penganjuran seminar di UiTM?’
According to The Malaysian Insider, MAIS “has decided to remain silent”.
In this matter of national importance, silence – whether elegant or eloquent – simply will not do. If MAIS chooses once again to bury its head in the sand like an ostrich, then we will only get a repeat of DUMC.
The Quran, in all its renowned English translations, mentions the Christians specifically by name. The above verses are from the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation.
MAIS highlights Surah Ali Imran verse 110 of the Quran that calls the Christians “perverted transgressors“.
MAIS interpreted the verse as:
“Peringatan Allah tentang usaha jahat Yahudi dan Nasrani yang berusaha menjerumuskan umat Islam ke lembah kekufuran dan larangan Allah untuk tidak menuruti serta mentaati mereka agar tidak terpengaruh dengan tipu daya mereka.”
The crux of the matter
(1) Is it criminal – considering that police reports were made against the UiTM seminar by Christians – for the speakers/MAIS booklet to highlight the contents of the Quran?
(2) Will MAIS stand by its interpretation of the verses that the Islamic council had highlighted in the booklet?
(3) Is MAIS just going to sit idly and allow the seminar to be criminalized in a trial by English media?
(4) Does MAIS concede to the critics of the seminar that highlighting verses from the Quran should be construed as “Christian-bashing”?
MAIS is the Islamic authority of Selangor. If the authorities do not speak up, then the Islamic NGOs will become the spokesmen for the Muslims.

Khadija said to Waraqa, “Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!” Waraqa asked, “O my nephew! What have you seen (in the cave Hira)?” Allah’s Apostle described all he had witnessed. Waraqa said, “This is the same one who keeps the secrets [ie. Archangel Gabriel] whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Apostle asked, “Will they drive me away?” Waraqa replied in the affirmative: “Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be driven out then I would strongly support you.” But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration (to Prophet Muhammad) also ceased for a period.”
