I have this “Mak Datin” WANNABE friend in her early forties and quite successful with her business endeavor. At first I thought she was a very modest person for she never flaunt her wealth like those people with new money always do, until one fine day I had a chat with her so called circle of girl friends, and found out that she is not what she portrayed herself to be in front of me. Every now and then, she will post photos of her “socialite thingy” – although none of the socialite seems to be those who usually appear in the Malaysian Tatler; her purchases; charity works; and once at the height of the “Kangkung Meme”, she posted a plate of Kankung Goreng at one fancy restaurant that she had for lunch in her FB, hoping that her friends would join in the bandwagon to “kutuk” our PM. Suffice to say, those who praise her are mostly those who detest her behind her back.
I learn one very fine lesson from my economic professor in college, she is the chairman of the department, and she has one rule to live by, she will never buy branded goods for she refuses to participate, pay and be part of commercialism. The truth is many of us still fall for that including myself, for commercialism has invaded our mind and house 24-7, so much so we fail to differentiate between our needs and wants i.e. necessity vs. luxury.
A CLASS is when you have it you have it, there is no need to flaunt it. Given an example, in the 90’s Versace is the in things for new Datuk and Datin for the design is very loud and flamboyant, so much so it dragged down the class out it.
People with Old Money normally live by the rules to wear the item as less as possible and never (well almost never) show them at functions with the same guests twice.
