Low Yat suspects called “thugs” five times by The J-Star in short 287-word article

For The J-Star, one side of the brawl at Low Yat Plaza were the “sales clerks” (Chinese) while the other side were the “thugs” (Malays).

The EvangeliSTAR story – see below – was filed for the MCA paper by Nicholas Cheng, the same Christian reporter who had previously covered the episode of the church cross removal, see ‘J-Star reporter @ Taman Medan: “Who gives you the right to claim this land as Muslim land?”

http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015/07/12/Melee-thugs-Low-Yat/

The J-Star copy above bylined to Nicholas Cheng is a short one – only 287 words. Yet in his brief report, Nicholas – a Christian reporter – referred to the Muslim suspects five times as “thugs”.

Nicholas is a Twitter follower of Hannah Yeoh who tweeted last night, “The race card is always used to cover up incompetency. Race based parties will shortchange voters”.

Media statement by Centre for a Better Tomorrow on the violence in Plaza Low Yat

13 July 2015

“The Low Yat Plaza incident should also serve as a reminder that ordinary citizens are only learning from some of our political or community leaders who fall back on race and religion either to push for their personal agendas or justify their wrongdoings. When people in power or influence play the racial and religious cards, their followers would naturally follow suit. Both need to be punished, either by law or voting them out.” – Cenbet co-president Gan Ping Sieu (MCA ex-vice president)

The J-Star’s “Brave Views, Bold Ideas” against racists and religious bigots

Uber EvangeliSTAR Wong Chun Wai, who styles himself a ‘secular liberal’, harbours the hope that Malaysians “will remain liberal-minded to avoid being hijacked by religious or racist figures”. See ‘A moderate Malaysia at all costs‘ (The J-Star, 11 July 2015)

Commenting on social media users who speak their mind in an unsavoury fashion, Chun Wai said, “They can’t articulate, they put you down, and they call you a lot of racist names …”.

He added that Malaysians are not using the online platform correctly but instead demonstrating an inability to think as well as being unreasonable and immoderate. Citing a counter example of an exemplary moderate Malaysian, Chun Wai named one such person to be the famous public relations man, Anas Zubedy (pix below).

Considered brave when you dare to criticize Islam

Chun Wai praised Anas for being brave and fair enough to turn a critical eye on Islam (see screenshot below).

According to him, Anas is a brave person because when it came to criticising his own ethnic group and religion – which Anas does a lot – his fairness is a benchmark for all Malaysians.

Wong Chun Wai: “We must accept the fact that Malaysia belongs to Malaysians of all races. I find it disturbing that the country has also becoming [sic] much more religiously conservative. This is not the Malaysia that we know, this is not the Malaysia that we want.” (see video – 2:50)

“For a long time already Muslims have been and are still being mocked, ridiculed and provoked by DAP leaders, DAP supporters, The Star, MalaysiaKini, The Malaysian Insider, Free Malaysia Today, Malaysia Chronicle, The Heat, the Malay Mail and other toilet tabloids. If their speeches, postings and articles are not provocative enough, then look at the comments by the bangsats where the opposition news portals deliberately allow if not invite racist and provocative comments. Biadab. Kurang ajar.” – Azmi Arshad (source: via Ismaweb, 13 July 2015)

  1. Why Helen?! What does stoking this fire benefit all of us as Malaysians…just let it be and move past this…be the stronger person please…you DON’T need to exploit racial issues and make a mountain out of a molehill…

    1. re: “be the stronger person please”

      I am a strong person.

I’ve withstood the smear campaigns, cyberstalking and all the harassment and still maintained common sense and civility in my blog.

    2. Jeremy1977,

The one exploiting racial issues are from DAP. Period.

They mock, slander, twist and turn. Now they imply that UMNO(meaning malays) are racist.

      1. “Now they imply that UMNO(meaning malays)”

The issue with you and a lot of Malays is that you associate criticism of UMNO as an attack on the entire Malay race, which is simply not true. You need to understand that UMNO is a political party that a lot of people, including many Malays are sick of due to corruption, economic mismanagement, questionable policies etc. Only when you get your head around this will you start being objective about the pros and cons of the respective parties in Malaysia.

        1. You guys think UmNO is corrupt and incompetent while PAS is full of talibanized malays. So which political party that represent the Muslim Malay that suits you people? Oh..wait a minute..ya.. those liberal Malays that party all nights, get drunk n screwed anything that moves..

          1. “So which political party that represent the Muslim Malay that suits you people?”

Do you really believe that either UMNO or PAS are doing well and are worth supporting? The very fact that they only accept membership from certain quarters is enough to alienate a lot of people and coupled with all the issues that’s hampering them atm, they are certainly are the last ones that I will ever support.

Are the alternatives or the opposition any better? Hard to say and possibly not, but like Einstein said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. UMNO have had 58 years, and they have to be commended for a lot of the good things that they did, but since Dr M’s time ended, they have become increasingly corrupt and the country has stagnated significantly. Time for a change and see if someone else can do a bit better.

“Oh..wait a minute..ya.. those liberal Malays that party all nights, get drunk n screwed anything that moves..”

Am always fascinated by how a lot of people, in particular Muslims view sexual promiscuity and alcoholism as being so much worse than corruption and other forms of injustice. I so don’t get this. Surely the weaknesses of the flesh should be a more forgivable vice than the act of blatantly screwing over others for personal gain.

            1. “Am always fascinated by how a lot of people, in particular Muslims view sexual promiscuity and alcoholism as being so much worse than corruption and other forms of injustice.”

Don’t be. Any succesful crime commited, whether it is graft, thieving, drug dealing, blackmailing or any crime involving monetary gains will conclude with the perpetrator spending the said gain on filling his stomach or spending it on woman.
If crime is a mean to an end, what better reward is there for criminals other than booze and whores?

            2. ‘insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.’

Absolutely. Why don’t you stop it already!

‘Am always fascinated by how a lot of people, in particular Muslims view sexual promiscuity and alcoholism as being so much worse than corruption and other forms of injustice.’

See. Gosh you are doing it again. How lah?

              1. Islam1st, I suggest you change your handle asap lah. I don’t think your brethren are appreciating the embarrassment that you are causing your religion on a daily basis. You truly are a special case bradder, and don’t forget to take your meds tonight .

                1. ‘Islam1st, I suggest you change your handle asap lah.’

Why lah? Discover another Muslim not to your liking is it? Must I change my religion too while I’m at it? Asap?

                  1. “Must I change my religion too while I’m at it?”

Well you can’t even if you wanted to. Not in Malaysia anyway. Isn’t it ridiculous how the government has got all this power over you, islam1st? They really do not respect your civil liberties, do they? And yet you keep on standing up and fighting for them. Go figure.

                    1. ‘Isn’t it ridiculous how the government has got all this power’

Are you criticizing JAKIM and the Majlis Raja-Raja Melayu that sanctioned it? Stop the hasutan already. It is not something for people like you to discuss. So back off will you?

Or are you simply not happy with the fact that ISLAM, like no other, is THE RELIGION OF THE FEDERATION in Malaysia?

                    2. “Are you criticizing JAKIM and the Majlis Raja-Raja Melayu that sanctioned it? Stop the hasutan already. It is not something for people like you to discuss. So back off will you?”

This is my problem with many Muslims, you lot get very hysterical when religion is discussed. Does Jakim and the other bodies define Islam? Why do you have to get so defensive and fanatical about it? What do I think of Jakim? Well not much actually and I hope that you are mature enough to handle that.

Can’t you use your crticial thinking and have a civilised conversation when it comes to discussing certain aspects of your faith? You are truly a hypocrite, islam1st. You and your bros can wank on about St Paul corrupting the Gospels without giving any concrete proof whatsoever, but cannot accept a factual statement that I made about how Islam in Malaysia is practiced.

If you can’t handle criticism your way, then don’t bother to partake in a religious discourse. Sleep tight.

                    3. ‘Where’s the Justice’

                      You are INSANE!

                      ‘civilised conversation’

Is your idea of having a ‘civilised conversation’ is when you keep mocking my religion and me having to play cool about it so that you start taking me seriously now that I fit into your idea of a moderate Muslim? Pretending, among others, what you were saying was something highly intellectual so that you won’t call me hysterical and critically challenged?

Anyway what makes you think the Muslims need you and your kinds to help them? You seriously think the Muslims simply can’t help themselves as far as their civil liberty goes, is it?

                      You guys are farking insane!

                    4. Where’s the Justice

                      Give it up, bro.

It’s an exercise in futility trying to have a meaningful discourse with those who habour a permanent sense of inadequacy. Perception of mockery and degradation by others are nothing but excuses made up to justify their prejudices and their defiance a facade to mask their own insecurity.

                      You just can’t win.

                    5. Civil liberties? liberty, liberty, liberty…reminds me of the gays’ rights…you are right,go mati better..

            3. You ni kalut lebih. Try to adapt sikit la, like BN.. All races sehati sejiwa tak kira bangsa dan Agama. Tu la pasai tak biasa bercampur asyik bebel nonsense aje.

              http://www.unilad.co.uk/articles/snapchats-unbiased-mecca-live-stream-shows-true-side-islam/

Bulan yang mulia ini millions from all shades and colors of life apa segala jenis bangsa (Chinese pun ramai tau) gather here. In Malaysia we gather kat semejid, bukan nak pi menyibuk2 gedik2 kacau Muslims nak tumpukan mass untuk beribadat!

Sad the non Muslims don’t have the opportunity to be here to feel the spirit of togetherness shared among Muslims. No RACIST nonsense here tau, everyone same same only.

        2. Where is the Justice,

I accept criticism, not rubbish that HannahYeoh and those worshipping DAP churn day in day out.

I too criticize UMNO. But I vouch it is not racist. No doubt it cares for the malays just like DAP prioritizes for chinese.

          1. ‘I too criticize UMNO. But I vouch it is not racist. No doubt it cares for the malays just like DAP prioritizes for chinese.’

Tak pe Abang Shamsul tak payah jadi apologetik dengan puak2 ni. Depa nak Melayu stops being Melayu. Tapi depa nak jadi seChina2 mungkin. Sampai tok nenek depa tak cakap Mandarin pun depa nak outdo China nak cakap Mandarin segala at the expense of Bahasa Kebangsaan sampai salah faham semua! tak guna buka hati dengan puak2 ni. Depa bukan ikhlas pun. Kalau tak boleh makan depa pura-pura berlakon jadi mangsa, meek and mild.

Tapi kalau rasa boleh makan depa sembelih tak ingat! Open secret la wei, Ridhuan Tee pun dah mengaku, bukti sebab dia ikhlas!

        3. For an ultra-Malay like me, UMNO=Melayu. When non-Malays bash UMNO, they also bash Malays. And for me, the 3Rs: Race, Religion, Royalty are very important. I will go all out to uphold the 3Rs when push comes to shove.

          1. I admire your honestly and commend you for it. I will say however that UMNO is a political party that is governing the entire country, not just the Malays. And as tax paying citizens to UMNO/BN, all Malaysians have the right to bash UMNO in a constructive manner when they do not deliver. And the same applies to all other parties as well.

Again,I will emphasise that most non Malays bash UMNO for economic and social reasons, not because they are a Malay party per se. Let me remind you that it was the Chinese who bailed out BN in the late 90s, when many Malays had thrown their support behind Anwar.

In my view, your loyalty and the loyalty of others to UMNO has led to their sense of entitlement to govern, and unprecedented corruption levels. If you were a little bit more critical of them, perhaps they would be doing a better job in running the country.

          2. Good for you. You are forthright with it.

But I note that you left out any reference to economics.

So, when push comes to shove, we can all subsist on fresh air and sunshine?

Sure thing – pull up the drawbridge, lock the doors and throw away the keys.

Because who needs the outside world with all it’s temptations to lead the pious astray?

You might as well lobby the government to pull out of all these FTAs, TPPs, AECs, WTOs and the like and go back to being self-reliant and self-contained.

As a proclaimed “ultra-Malay”, why don’t you make the call?

Or get islam1st or Rina to do it for you, seeing as how they are verbose and all….

        4. Sembang panjang, gebang tak habis. You can twist and turn, like those suckers at low yuck but we are not buying coz the pot is calling the kettle black. Or rather,;paku dulang paku serpih…”. The Malay version is more applicable on you, since it emphasizes on ‘you’ yang lebih.(worse in every sense of what you accuse others of).

    1. thugs, mobs, monkeys, sakais, stupid, lazy, rent seekers..the list goes on and on. 60 years on, just look at the kind of pendatangs, we end up with?!

Kat US, Oz and EU tak berani pulak buat semua ni. Pandai pula behaves?! Orang buat baik tak pandai nak bersyukur ini la jadinya…Syabas!

  2. Remember last time during the 80’s we had the “You Asked For It” tv program. Audience asked and the producer will try to answer through the program.

Nowadays when the Malays retaliate, to those chauvinist provocateurs, “You asked for it”.

Come the holier-than-thou evangelists, “You prayed for it”.

What I can say now from the penyapu incident in Johor and the recent low yat incident, “Your pray has been answered”.

More provocations, the more your pray will be answered!

    1. Well, Mat – for starters, your English could do with a brush up.

Next, go read the post by the Johor Crown Prince. Take time to digest it. Then rebut him, if you can, on the relevant Facebook page.

“chauvinist provocateurs”? Oh, my – what next?

I would say that it takes one to know one. “chauvinist provocateurs”, that is.

“holier-than-thou evangelists”? Now you are “channeling Helen”. And that’s spooky…..hahaha.

And “your pray(sic) has been answered”….it seems to me that you are claiming to know what “pray(sic)” the Almighty will take heed of and answer.

That sounds very much like hubris to me.

      1. ‘Well, Mat – for starters, your English could do with a brush up.’

Tipikal butthurt Cina bully at it again. Hahaha.

‘That sounds very much like hubris to me.’

And why am I not surprised?!

        1. And so you should be…..

It also takes a “bully” to recognise a “bully”, yes?

Walked into that one, didn’t you?

          Hahaha.

      2. Rithmatist,
        Video diatas Melayu kata;
        Baling batu sembunyi tangan

        translate bahasa England;
throw helmets, quickly run and hide fast fast wan

        1. The SOP of the Mat Rempits in a nutshell?

          Your perspicacity astounds me…..

The benefits of a classical education, perchance?

          1. Amboi mak.
Sister in law I oghang England tapi bahasa dia tak hebat macam you la Rithmatist. Classic la bahasa England you. Haiyaa! Makayah atuk nenek, siblings you atau Teresa Kok faham tak apa you dok bebel ni?

Dalam video dok baling helmet then doing their disappearing acts siapa Rithmatist? Mat Eskimo ke?

Owh.. “benefits of a classical education” ???

Kalau SJKC education tu sepesial sangat pasai apa sijil tak recognised seluruh dunia, setakat bole pi Singapore, Mainland dan Taiwan aje you tak tau ke? Kalau you takde SPM mampuih tak laku go anywhere else. Nak further education oberseas (besides those 3countries) pun kena hele’ mengharap bantuan “tongkat sakti” from Malaysian Education Ministry. Isssh you tak tau ke semua ni?

      3. You yourself could do more with a real brush or broom. Mengaku hebat, holier-than-thou Mat Saleh konon, in spite of you being just a yellow, over there.

“chauvinist provocateurs”? Oh, my – what next?

You miss the word ‘is’ in your sentence! Don’t you realize that?

And “your pray(sic) has been answered”….it seems to me that you are claiming to know what “pray(sic)” the Almighty will take heed of and answer.

You have not read the quran and its translation, have you? So, stop interpreting others’ faith and belief unknowingly. You and your kin are always spreading falsehood about things you are ignorant about, that results in your stupidity being reveiled.

        1. Over where, dude? In auld Blighty? Or down under among the kangaroos and the koalas where Malaysian VVIPs come to R&R?

“chauvinist provocateurs”? I thought I phrased that pretty well. Are you having problems understanding the meaning or fathoming the context? Or are you deliberately evading the issue in the best traditions of informed rebuttal?

As for reading the English translation of the Quran – what is your point? Are you debating theology here?

I would posit that the Christian Bible also contains pretty specific guidelines about how to live in accordance with the Will of God.

And, dude, it’s “revealed”, not “revelled”….

          Wasn’t your Spellcheck turned on?

        2. Sheesh…”reveiled”, not “revealed”!

          My bad….sloppy proofreading.

But still – donning the veil again?

  3. Dear Helen,

Let’s be fair to that “Christian Reporter.” He called the perpetrators thugs, which is an appropriate label to throw at them. He did not call out the race. [Maybe he did, and it was dropped by the sub-editor or editor but it doesn’t matter] I didn’t see anything wrong in the report.

Wong Chun Wai does genuinely appear to want respect for all races. In his articles he has been critical of representatives of the ruling government and also of the opposition. I also recall he has criticized Christian groupings for their zealousness in the past. His articles appear fair to me. I think he’s a good person whose heart is in the right place [being with The Star doesn’t make him bad].

    Gene.

    1. re: “being with The Star doesn’t make him bad”

Does it make him a covert enemy of the BN though? In my estimation, yes.

And btw, he’s not merely “with” The EvangeliSTAR, he presides over The Nest.

At the heart of the matter is the deleterious impact on Malaysia of the evangelistas, among whom WCW is a key and influential figure by virtue of his control over what is arguably Malaysia’s most powerful print
      media conglomerate.

Also, what is the J-Star‘s role. With Malaysiakini, there’s no disputing their anti-government credentials. TMI is pemfitnah tegar dan penghasut (seditious). The MCA paper is a backstabber.

The evangelistas are making the majority population rimas, and that’s putting it mildly. The Low Yat episode could be the start of a domino effect, like how the JPJ sarung incident sparked a spate of copycats.

How did the alleged theft of a handphone spark off the gathering of a sizeable mob? The ingredients (Malay pent-up anger) must have already been there in the first place.

The police clarification – there was no cheating on the part of the Chinese trader and it was a clear-cut case of theft (to be proven in court) – is unable to abate the false speculations and momentum of the Malay backlash.

My contention is that the DAP evangelistas – and Christian J-Star reporters who rub in the “thugs” description – have played the biggest part in provoking the Malay polity, and that the victims of the DAP’s greed are ordinary Chinese like the phone shop staff just going about their daily routine.

Other Chinese elsewhere brainwashed by the DAP doctrine are going to be victims too of a self-destructive political process catalyzed by the DAP greed for power and positions. I see The J-Star as one of the ideological (plus some) pillars of support for the DAP, in the same way that Utusan girds Umno.

      1. I don’t know what The Star’s real agenda is, aside from making money. I do think they are afraid to show unbridled support of the government for fear of losing advertisers. So they give ‘fair’ coverage to DAP. Sadly, the top hierarchy seems to have lost control to the born-again Christians who don’t just give ‘fair’ coverage to DAP, but through cunning use of words, knock the Malays and their religion.

I have written on your blog before and have cautioned grouping the born-again Christians with the Catholics. The born-agains are a strident lot. They have fundamentalistic beliefs that border on the insane: can’t watch Harry Porter; dinosaurs are men’s imagination; the earth is 10, 000 years old; they can’t visit temples nor allow their children to do so for fear that they will be converted or be possessed; do not allow their kids to learn Greek mythology, speak in tongue (it’s just gibberish) claiming the Holy Spirit is in them, don’t even dare mention the name Darwin; and a host of other beliefs that belie common sense. The Catholics on the other hand are a relaxed lot. You might get a rare priest laying on thick about the government, but it is rare. They don’t speak in tongues; both literally and figuratively. The masses are dry and, well, boring. They don’t interpret the bible willy-nilly. They allow their children to do all that born again Christians are against (see above).

So please, when you mention Christians in future, qualify it by naming them born-again Christians. The Catholics take umbrage at being put in the same pot as them.

        Gene.

        1. I wouldn’t want to be caught near a mob that’s yelling “pukimak punya Cina” and other anti-Chinese epithets. Nanti tak semena-menanya jadi korban pula.

The mob will not stop to ask if the Cina is someone pro-kerajaan or sokong pembangkang. The sentiment is just blanket anti-Chinese.

In the event of an anti-Christian mob, they will not differentiate between the various denominations. (I do try to make a distinction that you mention.)

The DAP evangelistas have got to be stopped. Otherwise they’re just dragging the rest of us (Chinese in general, non-Born Again Christians) into the pit.

And the bitter irony is that these DAP evangelistas are wearing tudung and songkok, and they might not themselves get beaten up. It is innocent Chinese and innocent Christians who have to bear the brunt for the DAP evangelistas’ kerja-kerja jahat.

Umno is the only power with the capacity to put a stop to the DAP.

          1. “The mob will not stop to ask if the Cina is someone pro-kerajaan or sokong pembangkang.”

Wear the blue BN vest when you’re visiting Plaza Low Yat or Bukit Bintang area next time.

              1. Hahaha, can’t help liao. I can’t find any DAP vest at their online store.

        2. Gene Kok

Quote: So please, when you mention Christians in future, qualify it by naming them born-again Christians. The Catholics take umbrage at being put in the same pot as them

Uh, what do we have here?

So, you take umbrage at being painted with the same brush as the Christians eh?

The matter that draws ire from the Malays when they talked about DAP and Christians disrespecting their faith is the usage of the ‘Allah’ word.

Do I need to remind you the plaintif in the suit is Herald, a Catholic publication?

Did the Protestants shirk and whine, “not us, not us. It’s the Catholics!!!”?

          Not to my knowledge.

While you are here purportedly lamenting on behalf of your Catholic brethens how butthurt you are to be painted in the same league as those Protestants (Charismatic included) and all eager to get into the good graces of this blog, I don’t hear any complaints from other denominations how heavy a burden they are carrying on your (Catholic) behalf.

Is it because they have stronger backbone?

          Just saying.

          1. HH,
Don’t fight don’t fight, whatever denomination you are from, you’re still Christians right? Better confer on more important issues like same sex marriage and what not. Can or cannot like that discuss la.

Its such a beautiful morning for all Muslims around the world. Well some just waking up from their sleep some about to go to bed. Many in Malaysia I believe, like me stay awake this whole night. Why? Its such a beautiful morning.

Lai lai lai, maybe you don’t know what these special feelings are all about, so giving you this opportunity to share here. Arab, Chinese, Caucasions, Negros, Indians, Malays, ayoyo just cannot list down here…

haiyaa HH, learn from us Muslims to mix well with all races, be kind, humble and compassionate to everyone can or not?

            1. Good morning Rina,

My, you sure are perky today.

How deliciously sweet you are without the usual angst.

              Keep it up. *thumbs up*

              Cheers

  4. What’s wrong with calling them “thugs”?

Should we instead call them “merely misguided youths who were letting off some steam in typical youthful exuberance without realising the consequences of their actions”?

That is so much more “politically correct”, isn’t it?

    1. Dictionary definition of ‘thug’: a hoodlum

a tough and violent man, esp a criminal

a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer

      a brutal ruffian or assassin

a man who acts violently, especially to commit a crime

      _________________________________________

Key descriptors of the word ‘thug’ – “violent/violence” and “crime/criminal”

Discerning readers of this blog will be able to appraise W-H-Y the J-Star‘s Christian reporter used the word repeatedly.

      1. So, the rent-a-mob that did the rounds of Plaza Low Yat were good citizens exercising their constitutional right to freedom of assembly and freedom of speech?

        How very edifying!

Let’s analyse the trigger words in the last para of the above. “Discerning readers”. ” W-H-Y”. “J-Star”. “Christian reporter”.

In what ways are your readers “discerning” (present company excepted….hahaha)?

And why use the acronym “W-H-Y”? Are they the initials of some clandestine cloak-and-dagger operation?

The “J-Star”? ‘Nuff said. One of Helen’s pet peeves. So yesterday.

As for “Christian reporter” – would it make any difference if the report was authored by a Buddhist reporter, Hindu reporter, Sikh reporter, Muslim reporter or Jewish reporter?

Ok, strike the last – there aren’t any Jewish reporters in Malaysia, as far as I know.

        1. re: “So, the rent-a-mob that did the rounds of Plaza Low Yat were good citizens exercising their constitutional right to freedom of assembly and freedom of speech? How very edifying!”

They’re a cause for concern. I read that they were mobilized from Kampung Baru, Kg Datuk Harun and other Melayu pekat areas. They shouted “pukimak punya Cina” – this kind of raw sentiment is worrying.

re: “In what ways are your readers ‘discerning’ (present company excepted….hahaha)?”

You’re my reader. You claim to be discerning. Are you saying that you’re the sole discerning individual here while the 99 others are thick as a log?

re: “And why use the acronym ‘W-H-Y’? Are they the initials of some clandestine cloak-and-dagger operation?”

Like the men from U.N.C.L.E.? There are many more such as Nicholas in The Nest.

re: “The ‘J-Star’? ‘Nuff said. One of Helen’s pet peeves. So yesterday.”

The EvangeliSTARs have been deluding themselves that they’re the best and brightest hope for our country’s future. Good that you’re bursting their bubble.

re: “As for ‘Christian reporter’ – would it make any difference if the report was authored by a Buddhist reporter, Hindu reporter, Sikh reporter, Muslim reporter or Jewish reporter?”

Buddhist/Hindu/Sikh reporters are negligible in The J-Star. Tempat tu sarang evangelista.

          1. ‘You’re my reader. You claim to be discerning. Are you saying that you’re the sole discerning individual here while the 99 others are thick as a log?’

            I bet he did!

    2. Betoi tu Rithmatist,

Banyak Chinese thugs also doing business in the open. Pirated, fakes, counterfeit products and all kinds of nonsense. Got lesen and permit to display their stolen goods some more. They even give you an official receipts for your purchase.
Bukan setakat one item saja, each day thousands of all sorts of products are being sold by these thugs.

From the wet markets, pasar malam, mini markets, supermarkets, pasar borong, pasar karat..

Kita seharusnya ikut teladan Lowyat community.
Ramai2 bantu cekop these thugs and hand them to the police.

      1. Rina,

If the selling of counterfeit goods does not involve violence, then you cannot call the traders ‘thugs’ – semantically (as per dictionary meaning) – even though they’re engaged in illegal activity.

  5. “Note by Helen: The J-Star is a Nest of Evangelistas and a lot of its editors and journos – like the name-calling Nicholas Cheng above – are Christians”

Isn’t Nicholas Cheng the one who almost got the wallop when he was reporting at Taman Medan?

            1. The Jerusubang brood cloning Hannah ‘mini me’, like her tudung-wearing interns copycatting her Occupy Masjid stunt.

          1. Why don’t you attend a church Sunday school and find out?

Nothing like doing some basic research, is there?

Or maybe that sounds too much like “hard work”. Like investigative journalism and all.

It’s far easier to shoot from the hip and let the projectiles strike where they may.

            1. re: “Why don’t you attend a church Sunday school and find out?”

I might catch fire (spontaneous combustion) should I dare step onto the church’s hallowed grounds.

re: “Nothing like doing some basic research, is there?”

I do plenty of research. There are many tables, line graphs, bar/pie charts, data sets and other useful info featured in my blog.

re: “Or maybe that sounds too much like ‘hard work’. Like investigative journalism and all.”

I daresay I’m one of the hardest working sopo bloggers around, and what’s more, I do all this work pro bono. Apa lagi The Rithamist mahu (daripada saya)?

re: “It’s far easier to shoot from the hip and let the projectiles strike where they may.”

Thanks for sharing your trade secret.

              1. No worries. You haven’t refuted any of my views.

                Which is SOP for you.

As for “spontaneous combustion”, I hope you aren’t harbouring any pyrotechnic fantasies now, are you?

                1. Why should I refute your views? You’re entitled to have your own differing opinions.

I and my blog are democratic unlike a certain someone and her Twitter.

              1. Brainless reporter, I would say…

And as he is on Twitter, I would add Brainless Twit

  6. Low Yat was about racism, deal with it – says Boo Su-Lyn.

    http://www.themalaymailonline.com/opinion/boo-su-lyn/article/low-yat-was-about-racism-deal-with-it.

And yet she says “And I allow myself to take comfort in the (dangerous) belief that yes, the Malays may get everything handed to them on a silver platter, but we Chinese can still beat them because we’re better, smarter and faster than them.”.

    So who’s the racist here?

She describes herself as “Boo Su-Lyn is a feminist who loves reading fiction”, perhaps she should add that she loves reading and writing fiction.

    1. Hmm….when Malaysia refuses to sign up for the AIIB….then, we are talking.

And are you referring to China Chinese, Singapore Chinese, US Chinese or Malaysia Chinese?

“better, smarter and faster” can cover many things. Competitiveness. Efficiency. Productivity. Among others.

Seems to me that you have a shibboleth about “racism”.

Racism – it’s everywhere. Even in the good ole US of A.

      Deal with it….

      1. ‘Seems to me that you have a shibboleth about “racism”.’

The same can always be said about you! Tak sedar diri punya olang!

  7. “Ali Tinju” arrested.

Zahid vows a “colour blind” approach……

Blogger “Papagomo” being sought by the police.

The Crown Prince of Johor making a statement on Facebook.

Najib warns that Sedition Act will be used against those who destroy racial harmony.

I wonder how Helen will parse and construe any or all of the above?

    1. ‘I wonder how Helen will parse and construe any or all of the above?’

Of course you will. Kita pun sudah tau apa lu olang DAP kakis akan buat dengan semua tu!

      1. Actually, I am waiting for Helen to comment. Seeing as how she’s on the ball and bristling with eagerness to sock it to her critics and detractors.

Unless you are taking up the cudgels on her behalf?

Which is very gallant of you, chivalrous even….

  8. Helen Ang,

So, are they “thugs” or not?

If they are not “thugs”, what are they?

    1. They’re young men who need anger management classes.

They’re also giving us a prelude to amok – how else can one describe a rampage that caused RM70,000 damage to the display items and other phone equipment?

And like Azmi Arshad wrote – see passage excerpted above – they’re a “reminder” or warning (I’m not using this word as an implicit threat) as to what’s brewing on the other (Malay) side.

The Chinese must stop being absolutists and try to see the non-Chinese POVs. Don’t allow themselves to be duped, manipulated and instigated by the evange listas.

      1. Helen,

Wishful thinking. Now vast majority of Chinese “TELAN BULAT BULAT” everything DAP says.

You , Helen, is a rarity.

      2. Helen Ang,

“…They’re young men who need anger management classes…”

Hm, so people who see violence as an answer for their racial hatred are not “thugs”, eh?

Oooppsss, it’s not “violence” nor “racial hatred” either, right? :)

        1. I think a ‘mob’ is the appropriate word, with its connotation of a crowd. ‘Thug’ infers gangsterism and violence.

In my opinion, the mob that beat up the Chinese youths and trashed their car were indeed violent. And they’re certainly on the wrong side of the law but I do not think they’re guilty of ‘criminality’ – note – as defined here in a limited sense to mean intent to commit robbery or theft.

As for “racial hatred”, some people are very insistent that there is no such thing. This includes many Chinese and Christian ardent opposition supporters.

For one example of the ‘Low Yat wasn’t anything racial’ line, you can read BNM’s comment @ https://helenang.wordpress.com/2015/07/15/low-yat-the-viral-video/#comment-154161

          1. “… I do not think they’re guilty of ‘criminality’ – note – as defined here in a limited sense to mean intent to commit robbery or theft….”

            OK, gotcha :

So those “young men who need anger management classes” are NOT guilty of criminality because they had no intention to rob or steal from that young couple.

Beating up the couple and thrashing the car is on the “wrong side of the law” BUT it is nothing criminal because there was no intention to rob or steal :)

            Nice :)

            BTW, you also said,

“… the mob that beat up the Chinese youths and trashed their car were indeed violent….”

AND “…‘Thug’ infers gangsterism and violence….”

I am guessing that despite the violence, the mob did not contain any “thugs” because the mob is not a “gang” but merely a “crowd” of “young men in need of anger management classes”.

Gotcha on that one too :)

“…This includes many Chinese and Christian ardent opposition supporters…”

And of non-Chinese and non-Christian ardent Government supporters as well :)

It sounds like there are only a very few Malaysians who do believe that racial hatred exists in Malaysia and will call it as it is.

I wish more Malaysians would think of ways to build bridges between the various races rather than write articles which continue to divide us.

            1. “… I do not think they’re guilty of ‘criminality’ – note – as defined here in a limited sense to mean intent to commit robbery or theft….”

“… the mob that beat up the Chinese youths and trashed their car were indeed violent….”

I think you’re purposely being obtuse. Of course beating up strangers and trashing their car is a criminal act (“on the wrong side of the law”).

We were talking about motive and mentality, so I separated the ‘mob’ from the criminal ‘gang’ because their motivations and mindset are different.

Let’s put it this way. Maybe there were around 100 youths involved in the mob rampage. On any other day, if you met them, they would not be mugging or robbing people, and would be by and large ordinary young men.

However it’s the regular job to gang member to – say – commit burglary or steal cars.

These burglars and car thieves may be violent but they would not simply pull out strangers from their vehicle for a random beating without any purpose of financial gain (i.e. relieving the victim of his cash and valuables and car).

There is another difference. The mob could be 200 or 300 persons. A gang/thugs who are criminals for a living may be half to one dozen individuals in number.

It does not serve any purpose to conflate the mob with a criminal gang. The mob has dispersed after Sunday night. A criminal outfit working as a gang are still together as a unit.

“…This includes many Chinese and Christian ardent opposition supporters…”

re: “It sounds like there are only a very few Malaysians who do believe that racial hatred exists in Malaysia and will call it as it is.”

Are you one of those who believes that racial hatred exists in Malaysia?

There’s another commenter BNM (whom I’ve pointed out to you) who is super duper adamant that there was no racial angle to the Low Yat riot. BNM fits the profile of a Firster.

re: “I wish more Malaysians would think of ways to build bridges between the various races rather than write articles which continue to divide us.”

I wish you could be more mature instead of bleating about kumbayah bridges while still living isolated in your ethnic and religious bubble. Talk is cheap. You all cakap lain, bikin dok sakitkan hati aje.

Why don’t you write a persuasive article in bahasa Melayu to reach out to the other side? It would be more convincing than berating me.

  9. DAP, PKR and Harapan Baru speaks on Low Yat.

“Sidang media bersama oleh para pemimpin DAP, PKR & GHB untuk merayu semua rakyat untuk bawa betenang, elakkan daripada menjadikan isu ini isu perkauman serta peluang untuk mengalihkan perhatian dari isu 1MDB dan skandal-skandal lain.

Highlight – isu ini isu perkauman serta peluang untuk mengalihkan perhatian dari isu 1MDB dan skandal-skandal lain. Here we go again!

    1. Quoting Helen , “puleez la”
      .
Typical “chameleon” and “praying mantis” sort of ( Do as I say, not as I do ) politicians trying to capitalize on a bad situation .

Promoting ( masuk bakul angkat sendiri) them self as the undisputed champions of the people and giving us the true meanings ( dari kaca mata mereka saja ) of the words “bersih Cekap & Amanah” .

    1. Those peddling pirate CDs everywhere, they are thugs too right? Let’s start with them first. Kasi tangkap semua.

      1. If I interpret the dictionary correctly, ‘thuggish’ infers gangsterish or samseng behaviour.

  10. The politically correct word of the day is SUSPECT. Not THUG. Apparently the journalist and the editor is vocabulary needs updating OR they are fanning RACIAL HATRED. You read, you choose!

PS: in my school days I would use a THESAURUS to avoid using the same words over and over unless i am trying to impress something in my composition.

    1. Yes, ‘star’ jour//writes are a vocabulary deficient lot if not shallow minded low-class lot, like the low class newspaper they represent.

I do get free copies of them every Wednesday though. I also always end up collecting the untouched-all over-lying other free copies to be used as ‘lapik kaki’ or sold as paper lama the next day. I suggest they stop giving these free copies because they usually end up as 3RS items.

They could do with a finer version of the description instead of ‘thug’ which indicates that they are being pre-judgemental as well.

  11. They are at it again…keeping the ‘Melayu bodoh’ narratives intact!

‘A teacher has deplored her former student’s “stupidity” in risking the lives and happiness of others by taking part in a brawl at Low Yat Plaza that later sparked a bloody riot.

In a post on Facebook yesterday, the woman named Noorul Aaron denounced the youth for falling for the rumours that his friend, who has been charged with shoplifting, was purportedly cheated by a phone seller at the popular gadget mall.

“You are ever so stupid, Jimmy. Shallow and unprepared as always. You haven’t changed a bit.

    1. You mean like shooting yourself in the foot by your eagerness to rush in where fools fear to tread?

I would suggest that you read a recent report on a Singaporean Malay girl who graduated as a doctor from NUS.

As for the “Melayu bodoh” narrative(s) – are you doing anything positive to reverse that mindset?

Instead of complaining about the “unfairness” of it all!

  12. COme on adik Cheng.
    Who is the samseng reporter?
    Calling thugs to youngsters freely?
Please do not be so samseng whn reporting.
Hopefully u r not a mischief church goer adik Cheng

  13. Look Hannah’s sill Tweet

Somebody should ask her whether she has any suggestions on the young buying pirate goods and illegal downloading from the internet. Sunday school should teach the young not to steal (including copyright stealing)
