BN sec-gen Nazri Aziz yesterday brought up the interesting religious conversion of former Argentina president Carlos Menem.
Menem (pix below) – whose parents emigrated from Syria – was raised a Muslim but converted to Catholicism “to achieve his political aspirations”, in the words of Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Politicians are largely alike. Some even look alike too … Menem and Samy Vellu for instance, could be cousins.
Other politicians who are children of immigrants have done the same thing, i.e. convert to the dominant faith of the land. Former American ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley (of Punjabi parentage) who converted from Sikhism to Christianity and former Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal (of Indian parentage) who converted from Hinduism to Catholicism are two examples.
Similarly, ethnic minority politicians such as Hannah Yeoh might play gamely at religious cross-dressing but alas these ones just leave their fans – read tweeted story below – waiting decades for an anticipated conversion which ultimately fails to materialize.
Nazri was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying the posts of chief justice, attorney-general and finance minister should only be held by Malays (meaning Muslim) because these VIPs are required to take their oath of office on a Quran before the Yang DiPertuan Agung.
[UPDATE (Feb 26): A group of awyers have countered Nazri’s misrepresentation of the oath of office.]
MCA and Gerakan have called out the BN sec-gen as “racist” for his narrow view.
So far crickets from DAP on this matter. Pre-Mahathirism 2.0, DAP would have been first to shout from the rooftops.
Nowadays DAP ministers in the Mahathir cabinet are instead too busy sucking up to the old man Nazri dubbed ”Father Of All Racists”.
