The rare politician with sincerity

September 8, 2019 at 3:46 pm 4 comments

Firstly my abstract of an article titled ‘Israel’s Prince of Paradoxes’ from The Atlantic monthly magazine, followed by my reply to reader Conrad.

The Atlantic article is by Michael Oren, Israel ambassador in Washington DC (2009-2013) and from 2015 onwards, a member of Knesset and deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Oren presents a profile of Avigdor Lieberman (above), the former Defence Minister responsible for stymying Netanyahu’s most recent effort to cobble together a ruling coalition and thus forcing Israel into its snap (do again) election this month.

Lieberman is a Russian-speaking emigre who made aliyah from Moldova to Israel at age 20 and now lives in a Jewish settlement on the West Bank.

He heads the Russian-based Yisrael Beiteinu party. Jews from former Soviet bloc countries account for more than 14 percent of the Israeli population.

According to Oren, Lieberman has resigned from four Israeli governments – in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2018 – all on a matter of principle! (He also resigned in 2012 after being charged by the state prosecutor with breach of trust but was eventually cleared of wrongdoing.)

Lieberman‘s resignation last November over the Gaza ceasefire, coupled with far right leader Naftali Bennett’s opportunism eyeing the vacant Defence Ministry, had sent the government of Netanyahu teetering to the brink.

The collapse of the Netanyahu administration in December 2018 was ultimately brought about by a subsequent dispute over legislation aimed at drafting ultra-Orthodox Jews into the military.

Following Israel’s April 2019 early general election, Lieberman continued to lay down the condition for his party’s four MPs to join the Netanyahu government, i.e. Haredi or ultra-Orthodox must be made to serve in the Israel Defense Forces. The IDF draft is compulsory for all Israeli youths with the exception of Haredi (pix below) whose job it is to study the Torah full time.

“Lieberman’s [hardline] message resonated with a significant number of Israelis fed up with Arab Knesset members who were openly opposed to the Jewish state and who condoned violence against it,” Oren wrote.

Lieberman has earned a reputation for straight-talking and being a firebrand but nonetheless a leader “who always lived up to his word”. He is however viewed as a “racist” by some and was boycotted by Crooked Hillary in Clinton‘s capacity as the first Obama Secretary of State.

Oren believes that Lieberman has a shot at becoming Israel’s future prime minister.

Hadi Awang is more sincere

Avigdor Lieberman is certainly a rare politician. He sounds harsh but sincere.

I also maintain that Hadi Awang is an honest politician.

Blog reader Conrad says I’m ‘like arguing that there’s something admirable about a bigot who is ‘honest’ about his or her bigotry” in my making the claim “Hadi Awang most honest politician in Malaysia”.

In his comment yesterday, Conrad said “there’s nothing honest about Hadi Awang esp when they now want the UMNO/PAS confab to be about inclusiveness”.

My reply: Let’s keep this for discussion after the Umno-PAS love fest on Sept 13-14.

Conrad: “Hadi saying Malay/Islam uber alles is what UMNO political [operatives?] have said before. You would not be praising their honesty.”

My reply: Umno was never as explicit as Hadi in spelling out that Muslim brotherhood is above citizenship.

In another separate comment, Conrad said as below:

Conrad: “The nons knowing how bigoted Hadi is, does not make his ‘honesty’ a virtue.”

My reply: Unlike Hadi, other politicians are never this forthright. Being upfront is being honest. Naturally what we hear from Hadi is unpalatable to us. But I prefer Hadi to Kit Siang, and PAS to DAP.

Dapsters would happily murder (I mean this figuratively) the Malaysiakini columnists like Thaya, Guna, Nat, Maryam …Somehow I don’t think PAS supporters harbour murderous intent towards Thaya despite his critical stances.

***

Conrad: “Demonizing and attacking other communities is [bigotry, racism].”

My reply: Both sides are guilty of this. Surely you don’t believe in their Peace n Love-Bangsa Malaysia facade?

***

Conrad: “Catering to an audience esp when it comes to pop culture is not in the same league as what Hadi says.”

My reply: Our pop culture proclivities align us with our tribe and disconnect us from other tribes (e.g. I listen to Mando-pop but not Malay or Tamil songs). But perhaps not in the same league since wars are often fought over religion but rarely over cultural issues. One exception that comes to mind is the Burmese taking great offence when the Brits refused to unshoe, and I agree with the Burmese totally.

***

Conrad: “Indeed Hadi claims that for all intent and purpose, any other culture is subordinate to Malay/Muslim culture which the Tamil and Chinese language media or personalities , political operatives have never said.”

My reply: Dapsters say all the time that bahasa Melayu is inferior and there’s no economic benefit in possessing a good command of it.

***

Conrad: “Is our cultural orientation bigotry too?”

My reply: Sometimes some practitioners of a culture believe theirs to be superior. You yourself said Hadi claims other cultures are subordinate to Malay/Muslim culture. Likewise Dapsters believe their culture to be ahead by 4,500 years.

CONRAD’S RESPONSE

QUOTE

The right of reply by Conrad is copypasted below for equal weightage. His original response was posted @ https://helenang.wordpress.com/2019/09/08/the-rare-politician-with-sincerity/#comment-219055

“My reply [Helen]: Umno was never as explicit as Hadi in spelling out that Muslim brotherhood is above citizenship.”

[Conrad] I said Malay/Islam uber alles. From Muhyddin “Malay first” rhetoric to the fact that BERSATU like UMNO is there to for Malay/Muslim “rights” spells out clearly that Hadi is not the only “honest” racist and bigoted politician in the Malaysian political landscape.

My reply [Helen]: “Unlike Hadi, other politicians are never this forthright. Being upfront is being honest. Naturally what we hear from Hadi is unpalatable to us. But I prefer Hadi to Kit Siang, and PAS to DAP.”

[Conrad] PSM’s D.r Jeyakumar is always forthright. Saying that Hadi is honest in his bigotry and racism is not the same as attempting to characterize his “honesty” as a virtue, which is what you are doing.

[Helen] “Dapsters would happily murder (I mean this figuratively) the Malaysiakini columnists like Thaya, Guna, Nat, Maryam …Somehow I don’t think PAS supporters harbour murderous intent towards Thaya despite his critical stances.”

[Conrad] PAS supporters would happily make everything Thaya, Guna, Nat and Maryam hold true and make it “haram” and make them live as second class citizens. Each one of them has in their writing opposed the very ideas that PAS holds to be true.

[Conrad] That’s worse than the online trolling of the DAP apparatchiks.

[Helen] “My reply: Both sides are guilty of this. Surely you don’t believe in their Peace n Love-Bangsa Malaysia facade?”

[Conrad] No both sides is not guilty of this. The Bangsa Malaysia kool aid is fools gold about equality of citizenship in this country where there is none. The other is the real world application of Islamic fascism.

[Helen] My reply: Our pop culture proclivities align us with our tribe and disconnect us from other tribes (e.g.

[Conrad] Nothing is in the league of religious warfare. This is why people like Thaya, want a secular state or as much of it as possible. Again tribalism when it comes to sports or pop culture maybe toxic but it does not results in genocide.

[Helen] My reply: Dapsters say all the time that bahasa Melayu is inferior and there’s no economic benefit in possessing a good command of it.

[Conrad] So has Mahathir at one time. But even if some partisans says this, it is a response to the bigotry of people like Hadi. People like Hadi want people to retreat to tribalism because it makes his job easier. Again you have not shown me any Non Muslim political operatives who wants the Malays to be subordinate to the Non Malays.

[Helen] My reply: Sometimes some practitioners of a culture believe theirs to be superior. You yourself said Hadi claims other cultures are subordinate to Malay/Muslim culture. Likewise Dapsters believe their culture to be ahead by 4,500 years.

[Conrad] Yes this is bigotry. And DAPster do not have a culture or at least there ideology is not comprable to the Islamofacism of PAS. You get the Non religious DAPsters arguing with the Christian ones. The Muslim Dapster attempting to be moderate. The online rhetoric of DAP supporters is not homogeneous. What is, is that they hate UMNO/PAS and can you really blame them ?

[Conrad] Also since we are talking about honesty here, could you put up my replies too. Thanks

    Edit to add.

If you really want to talk about the toxicity of DAP apparatchiks you don’t have to use PAS, all you have to do is witness the mendacity and ill temperament of those supporting the “development of Penang ” where those who oppose the development action party are demonized .
