  1. The current political situation in Malaysia perfectly fits the description “Politi Scheiss” (Political Shit in German)

We basically have a dysfunctional democracy under our current Pakatan government.

Meanwhile, the economy is in trouble, cost of living is still high or even higher, the national debt continues its steady rise since Anwar was expelled from UMNO in 1998 and both Lim Guan Eng nor Azmin Ali seem to be able to do anything to even begin to reduce it.

At te same time, the U.K. faces uncertainty and division over BREXIT in the run up to the general elections in December, whilst in the U.S. Trump faces impeachment.

Meanwhile, I just posted this on WhatsApp to some friends, which shows what a political mess we a currently in.

Things have really gotten even hotter.

The biggest problem in Pakatan is the power struggle between PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) president Anwar Ibrahim and deputy-president Azmin Ali, believed to be as to who will become the next prime minister after Mahathir.

Many people have noticed that Azmin appears to be more favoured by Mahathir and Azmin supports Mahathir to stay for the current full term of the Pakatan government, whilst Mahathir had promised to hand over the prime ministership to Anwar and Pakatan and Pakatan supporters believed that Mahathir would only serve as prime minister for two years and hand over to Anwar, expectedly by mid-2020. On the other hand, Anwar repeatedly says that he believes that Mahathir will hand over the prime ministership to him when he steps down but more recently, Mahathir has indicated that he will remain on as prime minister for longer to sort out the country’s mess inherited from the previous Najib/BN government.

However, there are many people who believe that Mahathir will hand over to Azmin instead.

One of them is KTemoc, a staunch DAP supporter or former DAP supporters from Ayer Itam, Penang now resident in Australia.

Whilst PKR is a multi-racial party, the majority of its members are former UMNO Malays and carry with them the UMNO warlord culture of different chieftains within the party and their followers fighting internally for power.

PKR was originally founded as Parti Keadilan Nasional by Anwar Ibrahim, his party loyalists in UMNO and their followers after Mahathir had Anwar expelled from UMNO in 1998 duringthetime of the Reformasi movement.

Later, the majority of members of Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM, the buffalo head party, formerly Parti Sosialis Rakyat Malaysia), voted to merge with PKN to form PKR and Dr. Syed Husin Ali became a PKR vice-president.

However, the UMNO culture they brought along with them, is the reason for why PKR is the most troubled party within Pakatan Harapan right now.

Interestingly enough, even though it comprises mostly former UMNO members, Mahathir’s Malay-only party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM, Malaysian United Indigenous Party) has less problems than PKR.

Also, the Islamic party within Pakatan – i.e. Parti Amanah Negara, which split from PAS, does not have such internal problems and neither does PAS.

The multi-racial but largely Chinese DAP also does not have such internal problems as PKR.

However, sometimes MPs of PPBM sometimes clash with DAP on certain issues, especially related to race and religion.

With Malaysian politics in such a mess, how to address more important issues such as the economy, cost of living issues, graduate unemployment issues and so on.

Meanwhile, the members of PRM who merged with PKN, did not de-register PKR with the Election Commission, so the small number of PRM members who disagreed with the merger with PKR revived PRM as a socialist party, though they are very small and are hardly known.

However, the small PRM still cooperates with the Parti Sosialis Malaysia, formed by member of Parti Sosialis Rakyat Malaysia who disagreed with the party’s decision to drop “Sosialis” from their name after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
