American Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is a staunch evangelical Christian. Pompeo has said in interviews he always keeps a Bible open on his office desk and that the Holy Book “informs everything I do”.
The US Department of State headed by Pompeo submits an annual report to the American Congress on the status of religious freedom around the world. Every year, the department obtains its information from religious groups, NGOs, human rights monitors, academics, media contacts and others.
Their country report on Malaysia was released a fortnight ago (June 10) and covered issues such as Pastor Raymond Koh’s unresolved disappearance, Zakir Naik’s provocative speeches, Mahathir’s anti-semitism and Malaysia’s entry ban on Israeli Jews and other religious controversies.

Passages related to Isma contained in the Department of State report on Malaysia’s religious freedom status are reproduced below. The Office of International Religious Freedom in Washington DC reported:
”In May [2019] Isma said postage stamps that included images of historic Christian churches was ‘another example of Muslims being bullied,’ and that they [the stamps] could portray Malaysia as a ‘Christian nation’.”
It also noted:
“During an August speech at the National Ummah Unity Convention, Aminuddin Yahaya, president of Ikatan Muslim Malaysia (Isma), accused the Christian Federation of Malaysia of an ‘evangelical’ drive to place as many Christians as possible in national leadership positions and called Christian evangelism one of the biggest threats to the Malay-Muslim community. The general secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia told media the claims were ‘unfounded and meant to fear-monger by rallying Muslims to name Christians as enemies,’ and was ‘tantamount to inciting hatred towards a minority religious community’.”
