Update

The Star’s star reporter Joceline Tan believes the “big moment has arrived” for Ismail Sabri and that the former DPM will be sworn in as PM9 before the week is out.

The word is Ismail Sabri’s on his way to securing the support of 115 MPs, Joceline said in her column today.

”According to political sources,” she added, “Muhyiddin would have named Ismail as his successor on the day he announced his resignation as premier”.

“But at that point, Ismail was still struggling with the numbers and he had even sought support from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to no avail,” Joceline revealed.

Perjuangan yang hampir selesai

Since early this morning when I blogged ‘BN-PN lineup could be like this’, the numbers for the Umno nominee have firmed up.

So let’s revisit Ismail Sabri’s target of 115.

Bersatu supreme council member Eddin Syazlee Shith stated today that support for Ismail Sabri is “solid” — counting 31 MPs from Bersatu plus four more MPs aligned to Perikatan.

The four are Xavier Jayakumar, Larry Sng, Arthur Joseph Kurup and Jeffrey Kitingan.

(Update: Other reports name independent MPs as Steven Choong and Jugah Muyang).

(4+31=) 35 MPs from the Bersatu cluster plus Umno’s own 38 plus PAS’s similarly “solid” 18 equals 91.

Plus three MPs from MCA-MIC and one from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) i.e. PBS’s Maximus Johnity Ongkili make 95.

95 plus Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s bloc of 18 MPs takes Ismail Sabri to 113, and across the finish line, it would seem.

Harapan springs eternal, however, in the breast of Dapsters who are still hoping that Anwar can pull a rabbit out of his hat.

Cina DAP have been the engine driving the ‘Kerajaan Gagal’ movement and they’re all revved up. These opposition supporters will not be able to brake their anti-government momentum.

In the Sheraton musical chairs, Ismail Sabri shuffles one step up to take Muhyiddin’s seat. Then they all sit down and get back to business as usual. Ho hum.

Don’t expect the Chinese to be able to chill though.

  1. chinese shd look at the positive side, only a malay muslim govt can pacify the malay anger even if its a useless one.

  2. The ex-PM had 114 votes till the UMNO 13 votes withdrew support. The proposed PM backed by UMNO has 114 votes and is the leading contender for the job but saddled with the condition from Bersatu that its Policies are to be followed to the letter. What’s the difference ? With this puzzle of a Malaysian kind, only the Yang Di Pertuan Agong and the Royal Sultans can shape a new bi-partisan Government with a Leader who not only can eradicate the Covid-19 virus but also gain the respect with honour related to the august post of the Prime Minister.. For those who are not dreaming, I have already lost 2 good friends – a chairman of a bank and a lady hairdresser. The Pandemic is 22,942 cases today with 178 deaths, 70 dead pregnant women and 38+ orphans. These stats are strictly for those who are not dreaming.
