Kenapa Kit Siang ditahan ISA hampir 1½ tahun mulai 18 Mei 1969?

A Malaysian Malaysia is the antithesis of a Malay Malaysia …”.

Lima bulan kemudian, DAP ditubuhkan pada 11 Okt 1965.

Nota sampingan: Devan Nair dilantik menjadi presiden republik Singapura 1981–1985. Bermakna DAP sebenarnya diasaskan oleh orang Singapura.

Kit Siang sendiri pernah memegang jawatan setpol kepada Devan Nair (gambar bawah).

Kit Siang the ‘Crusader’

“The entire Malaysian people and nation is on the move and on a great wave for change. The DAP has emerged as the leading Opposition party in the country, with the largest Opposition Parliamentary group.”

“Our victory in the West Malaysian general elections is only the first step and the beginning of our crusade for equality and justice in Malaysia, equality for the races, languages, cultures and classes — a Malaysian Malaysia.”

  1. 13th May 1969 definitely rings a large bell in my head. A conflagration set alight by multiple factors created over time since Merdeka 1957. At that moment the Malays had only 2% of the Nation’s assets 12 years after Merdeka. The British had 70% of the best assets, the Chinese 25% of the third rate. The Government kept and practised British Colonial Currency Policy which meant a country could only spend what it earned even though Bank Negara Malaysia was established in 1957. The rich became richer. The poor were poorer. My young Malay graduate friends returned home to find themselves poor in their own country where there were no OD, credit cards, car or house loans or nothing. The non-Malays suffered likewise. In 1964, political agitation began with Lee Kuan Yew in the Dewan Rakyat which was continued in the streets like Sulaiman Court now Sogo. I was there. On hindsight, it seemed Lee Kuan Yew had a Plan B to exit Malaysia. Because without a secret deal with Uncle Sam in 1962, the intelligent Lee Kuan Yew would not have taken the risk with a sleepy colonial port. The reward was the secret lush trades of the Cold War 1948-1989. The wealth so garnered pushed Singapore to the First World. Man proposes. God disposes. In 2020 and 2022, Singapore was stripped naked. Here lies Singapore’s problem with Lee Kuan Yew’s legacy for Singapore in ruins. Other factors which sparked 13th May 1969 were the imposition of import tax on Penang in 1967, the mobility of the gangsters via the Causeway, the accidental killing of a gangster in Kepong. Finally out of pique , the Leader of the MCA announced at 2.30 pm that MCA would leave the Alliance. By 5 pm, the riots began. By 10 pm Tan Siew Sin announced the return of the MCA. It was far too late. The damaged was done. He was in the BN dog house till he retired in 1974. And where did the veteran then a sycophant fit into 13th May 1969 ? Only he and God know !
