If Jabatan Agama could clarify whose permission to wear tudung

‘Siti Hasmah: My husband forbids me from wearing tudung’ is the most read headline in Malaysiakini at the present moment.

“I don’t wear tudung until today,” the news portal reports Tun M’s wife Siti Hasmah as saying.

“My husband forbids me from wearing tudung. Before one wears tudung, she must ask for her husband’s permission,” she told a press conference at a symposium ‘Siti Hasmah: Wanita pencorak masa depan negara’ in Bukit Damansara. (more…)

A tale of two First Ladies and their boutique apparel

Malaysiakini columnist Mariam Mokhtar talked today about the use of tudung “as a political tool, to manipulate the masses”.

Several of the Malaysiakini subscribers commenting on her article predictably criticized Rosmah Mansor for not wearing tudung. (more…)

# je suis tudung wearers

‘DAP MP says tudung ban “discriminatory”, offers legal help for court challenge’, according to a Malay Mail report today, referring to a statement by DAP deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo.

Some hotels don’t want tudung-wearing women to be manning their front desk. DAP is crying foul.

The assailants, a man and his wife, are now wanted by police to be investigated for assault. (more…)

The miseducation of Dr Kua Kia Soong

“How ironic, that an Operasi Lalang victim like Kua Kia Soong is derided as being ‘naïve’, ‘vengeful’ and ‘makan dedak’ whenever he writes of the need for Mahathir to face up to his political sins,” wrote columnist Josh Hong in Malaysiakini yesterday.

Leading Chinese educationist Dr Kua was a one-term DAP Petaling Jaya MP in the 1990s. He is also a former ISA detainee whom Tun Mahathir, as PM cum Home Minister, had locked up in Kamunting for 445 days. You really can’t blame the PJ PhD doctor if he should feel sinned against by the Alor Setar medical doctor. (more…)

Penang’s botak hills and mushrooming high-rises on slope

I left Penang some 10 years ago. Despite the time and separation of distance, it was still distressing to see the landslide in Tanjung Bungah − practically in my old neighbourhood.

The location where it happened is familiar in memory to me although with the passing of my mom (and recently my dog), my ties with Penang are now rather tenuous.

Nonetheless it’s mind-boggling – looking on from the outside – how the state government approved the building of those two 50-storey (!) residential blocks where the landslide happened. (more…)
