Sudahpun timbul gelombang senyap tindakbalas Melayu.

Vote swing: Chinese one way, Malay/Indian the other

GE13:

Preliminary analysis based on Sungai Siput experience

By Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj

Jeyakumar Devaraj

(MP for Sungai Siput)

It was 8.00pm on 5 May 2013, polling day, and we were at the main counting centre. Our tally of the 100-odd Form 14s that our counting agents had brought back showed that we had won with a majority of about 2,600 votes.

But there was none of the elation that accompanied our 2008 win over Samy Vellu. We were feeling down because the Form 14s were showing that Malay and Indian Malaysian support for us had declined when compared with the 2008 general election. It was the overwhelming swing of Chinese Malaysian voters towards Pakatan that had propelled us to the win.

Why the Pakatan popular vote advantage is nothing to shout about

Pakatan have gone to town shouting that the 5,623,984 votes or 50.87% it won for Parliament nationwide makes them the more legitimate winner of GE13 than BN which won a total of 5,237,699 votes or 47.38%.

In other words, Pakatan candidates nationwide collected 386,285 more Parliament votes than did their BN opponents

However the fact of the matter is that Teresa Kok alone had 51,552 votes more than her MCA rival in Seputeh.

When Umno wins the GE, who will be blamed?!

Malaysiakini columnist Mariam Mokhtar made an astute observation yesterday from the pro-Pakatan point of view.

She wrote in her column under the headline ‘Waytha’s betrayal‘:

“The marginalised Indians are euphoric about being kingmakers in GE13 but if Umno wins, it would not be difficult to imagine who the nation will blame and who will be the biggest losers.”

Mariam has read the Pakatan mood very knowledgeably. Continue reading “When Umno wins the GE, who will be blamed?!”

“Corruption is corruption, whether more or less”

‘Political expediency’ is telling people what is music to their ears but going to another group of people and telling them something else, says Wee Choo Keong. Principles and not political expediency will ensure that national interests come first.

Excerpts from an interview with the Wangsa Maju MP titled ‘PKR’s gadfly, BN’s critique‘ (The Sun, 14 March 2013) are copypasted below. Continue reading ““Corruption is corruption, whether more or less””

Lim Senior & Boy-Boy power in on Johor DAP

When I posted my hypothesis that it would be a good tactical move of the DAP to field an Indian candidate in a Chinese-majority area, I had based it on an announcement made by Johor DAP chairman Dr Boo Cheng Hau.

However Dr Boo had said that a fortnight ago. My theory on Labis – following up on Dr Boo’s remarks – sounds like reasonable strategy on paper but that might be as far as it goes. There’s a popular saying “A week can be a lifetime in politics”. Continue reading “Lim Senior & Boy-Boy power in on Johor DAP”

But Hindraf, you have declared war on Umno before, bukan?

Hindraf chief P. Waytha Moorthy believes that politicians merely ride on the issues to gain political mileage.

“The poor Indians have seen 12 elections before this and many have voted in many elections believing in the promises of both divide. They are tired and have given up hope on politicians,” he said. Continue reading “But Hindraf, you have declared war on Umno before, bukan?”

Oh “Look what Tokong said not too long ago”

By Calvin Sankaran

Look what Tokong said not too long ago:

[In The Malaysian Insider, 8 Sept 2012]

“Lim Guan Eng told voters today that the only way to boot Lynas Corporation back to Australia and shut down its controversial rare earth refinery in Kuantan is by voting out Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming polls.
