Malays gave up country name ‘Tanah Melayu’ in 1963, any regrets?

On 5 Aug 1957, the Raja-Raja Melayu signed the perjanjian Persekutuan Tanah Melayu with British High Commissioner Sir Donald MacGillivary in King’s House, Kuala Lumpur.

On 15 Aug 1957, the Rang Undang-Undang Perlembagaan Persekutuan Tanah Melayu was passed by the Majlis Mesyuarat Undangan. Pictured below is the 1957 constitution.

PersekutuanTanahMelayu1957

On 31 Aug 1957, the watikah pemashyuran kemerdekaan Persekutuan Tanah Melayu was signed by Tunku Abdul Rahman.

The historic document in Jawi script is scanned below.

WatikahKemerdekaan

Its translation to bahasa Melayu rumi reads:

Pemasyhuran kemerdekaan

You will notice in the proclamation of Independence – sort of our ‘birth certificate’ – that the Raja-Raja M-E-L-A-Y-U are mentioned throughout.

No mention of “Cina” though.

But more importantly, the 1957 watikah pemashyuran kemerdekaan refers to this country as Persekutuan TANAH  M-E-L-A-Y-U  in name.

Federation of the Malay States.

Only Penang and Malacca were the Straits Settlements but with Merdeka, the Queen of England duly relinquished her rights to both colonies.

Only Penang is not a Malay state

When the all states in the Malay peninsula were first federated in 1948, the agreement was similarly called perjanjian Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.

These states, with the exception of Penang, have always been Malay states ruled by a Raja Melayu yang berdaulat.

As you can see, Penang is unique in the scheme of things. But then again, Penang ain’t that very big and the fact of this small state (one out of 11) not being a Malay state did not deter the Semenanjung from officially adopting the name Tanah Melayu.

JohorTubuh1895

Always had Melayu identity

On 14 Apr 1895, Sultan Abu Bakar formalized the Undang-Undang Tubuh Negeri Johor. See above the kitab Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Johor; the ‘1312’ on the front cover refers to the year in Hijrah.

On 2 Nov 1911, the Undang-Undang Tubuh Kerajaan Terengganu was framed.

And the modern Undang-Undang Tubuh Negeri of the other states Malay were similarly constituted in the following years.

Tunku, Tunku what did you do?

Up till 1963, this land was Tanah Melayu.

But when Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak merged with the 11 states of Tanah Melayu, then our country become Malaysia.

Tunku, the Bapa Kemerdekaan, enjoyed a warm personal friendship with MCA founder Tan Cheng Lock who was a Malacca Baba.

The first cooperation between Umno (Abdul Razak Yahya) and MCA (Ong Yoke Lin) was crafted in 1952 for purpose of the Kuala Lumpur city council election.

MalayaFirstCabinet

In the photo above of Tunku’s first Cabinet, there are three Ministers from MCA. They are Cheng Lock’s son Tan Siew Sin, Ong Yoke Lin and H.S. Lee.

All three were men of a different breed from the Chinese politicians we have now. Tan was a Baba, Ong converted to Islam in 1961 taking the name Omar while Lee came from a rich family of tin miners. His grandfather was a scholar while his great grandfather had served as an official in the Chinese emperor’s court.

MCA’s Tun Col. H.S. Lee was clearly unlike today’s DAP evangelista politicians who are greedy carpetbaggers exploiting the gullibility of a resentful Chinese electorate.

Not #trending ... Money can't buy "class"

Tanah Melayu is racist!

Nowadays if you as much as dare whisper the words Tanah Melayu, the Dapsters will scream that you’re a “racist” !

They will demonize you as a hater who is anti-national unity. They will smear you as a “bigot” who wants to divide or tear apart our society. They will hang the scarlet letter ‘E’ around your neck, announcing to the cyber world – which is thoroughly dominated by them – that here walks an “Extremist” terrorizing his meek and mild and peace-loving Malaysian neighbours.

Oh yes, and you’re “low class” too.

Some of them will even go as far as to claim that “the ‘Malay’ is [merely] a political construct that was initiated by the British”.

The paragraph below is extracted from an article by the (now defunct portal) Nut Graph editor Jacqueline Ann Surin titled ‘The problem with Malay unity‘.

The problem with Malay unity - The Nut Graph 2014-08-31 00-23-47

Label ‘pendatang’ makes the Chinese berserk

Never mind history but you’re strictly forbidden to call the Chinese ‘pendatang’ even though they behave like one.

The term “pendatang” is a provocation that will assuredly make the Firsters go all ballistic. The predictable rage they display when called as such is really, really vicious.

An Isma activist Alifah Ting Abdullah once suggested to the non-Malays:

The Yahudi Yeohs retaliated against her short 400-word statement with more than 1,000 comments:

So much for loving their enemy and turning the other cheek.

CartoonBeritaHarianAug1958

No hope, no cure

They talk about “national reconciliation”.

They claim they want nothing better than national unity, and to live in peace and harmony.

But the truth of the matter is that MCA has already torn up the social contract.

And the DAP is using a most sneaky backdoor method – “there are no Malays, no Indians too and zero Chinese, all are Malaysians” – in order to negate Article 153 of the Federal Constitution on the “special position” of the Malays.

Their Politics of Hate has poisoned the well, and their endless fitnah destroyed good faith and goodwill between the races almost beyond repair. All because they’re too greedy for power and believe that the ends justify whatever the means.

DAP bawa budaya politik samseng kongsi gelap?!

        “Secret societies infiltrating the PPS?”

‘From what we already know, the PPS has never been registered and a big question mark therefore hangs over its legality; on numerous occasions its members have been seen assaulting unarmed citizens and reporters; it has recruited thousands of members of dubious backgrounds; it lacks the legal standing to execute its enforcement power which according to the country’s laws is only granted to the police and other specific bodies. As if that is not enough, it has been widely rumored that someone in PPS is associated with the secret societies.’

Encik Lim Guan Eng is that how you want to majukan Pulau Pinang, with triads is it? And for once, can you please stop behaving like a Abang Besar, can or not?

    2. Admittedly the theme used by Penang is more appropriate, not to mention timely adequate. “Bersatu dan Maju” reads much better and very practical. Never in the history 90 % of penangites including the malays are with LGE. In fact one if his deputies is a malay though his function is principally decorative. Halal-haram is secondary. This is what “bersatu” really means.

Thus Putrajaya allowed such thing, if does Najib must answer for it.

    2. “Bersatu dan Maju”.

Tema pun tak ada jiwa!! Direct translation from ‘Unity and Progress’, is it?

PPS going around and beat people, how to unity like that?

And progress from what, from legal to illegal is it?

  1. Am not surprised. Firstly, because this LGE is that classic Cinabeng who thinks he’s the only one clever and right, like Harry Lee down south. And this is yet another opportunity to continue whittling away at the constitutional foundations of our nation.

But can’t blame him for striking whenever there’s an opportunity. Every year I like to watch the Merdeka countdown at midnight on the tv. Except for TV3, none carried it this year. Even RTM1 was showing a badminton match (not even Malaysia playing). And the TV3 minute-long shaky footage was lovingly focused all on Ahmed Shabery Cheek singing the Negaraku, with a caption saying it was downtown. No flag raising shown etc. I kept switching channels but couldn’t see anymore countdowns.

I know we’re mourning for the MH victims and I share their grief, but this is our Merdeka, our Independence day. It supercedes everything. If the BN government doesn’t see the importance of commemorating this day, then it shouldn’t complain of unpatriotic Malaysians. Last year, too, there was just a brief countdown shown.

It was so different under Tun Dr M. I remember gathering at Dataran Merdeka with friends. It was so festive and cheerful, with everyone greeting each other.

Btw, was at a shopping mall earlier where there’s a lucky draw for customers to fill up a card and drop it in a huge box. The theme is Merdeka and the cards are in the four colours of the flag. A Chinese-speaking woman was asking about it at the info counter, and was told to pick one of the colours. She asked for GREEN! The Chinese boy manning the counter stifled a laugh and told her there is no green in our flag. Dunno what they teach in these SRJK Cs.

    1. re: “this LGE is that classic Cinabeng who thinks he’s the only one clever and right”

Also classically one finger pointing at others and three fingers pointing back at himself. He accuses Umno of ‘Divide and Rule’.

Isn’t taking his state – the only odd one out – down a separate route on the National Day theme being divisive if not recalcitrant and rebellious?

    2. Well, Harry Lee actually built a nation that is now a global financial center although most of the money residing in Singapore is of dubious origin. Nonetheless, he did built something.

The dimwit who is now a Chief Minister is a nobody. He was booted out by the previous Big 8 accounting firm while he was working in Australia.

But as they say, fate intervened and now he has become a somebody. But fate is not permanent. It will intervened again. After all, according to Classical Chinese worldview, the world moves in cycles. Good things happen and bad things also happen.

Who knows, the next cycle could turn out to be a disaster for the failed account turned Chief Minister.

    3. ‘The theme is Merdeka and the cards are in the four colours of the flag. A Chinese-speaking woman was asking about it at the info counter, and was told to pick one of the colours. She asked for GREEN! The Chinese boy manning the counter stifled a laugh and told her there is no green in our flag. Dunno what they teach in these SRJK Cs.’

Surely this lady is a hardcore PR supporter. The only huanna flag she can remember, it seems is the one from PAS, thus the green!

  2. Somebody here acting like zionist.. we gave them land to live now they want us to follow their demands.. only handfulls are grateful!!… some sort of zionism is happening in malaysia!!

.. thats why our unity and peace are in jeopardy.. when one group make absurd demand against home people.. malays don’t realise this is happening in their homeland! Wake up!! its time to boycott them… dont support them…

    1. It appears impossible for this fact of the “Malay” root to be pointed out to the Yahudi Yeohs in a language (or in any language) that they understand without them flying into a nasty rage at the mere mention.

  3. Dong Zong………..

Cuba Cik Helen CERITAKAN SEDIKIT tentang Zong Dong, sejarah nya, pembiayaannya, TUJUAN Nya Dan siapa yang kuat MENYOKONG DongZong.

        Apa lagi cina mahu?

        1. Cuba terangkan macam mana pendidikan Cina “membelakangkan Artikel 152 Perlembagaan Persekutuan”?

  4. Thanks & congratulation Helen for your historic historical article. Concise but if extensively elaborated can qualify you for a PhD, hehehe, seriously, though.

I have been wondering about and asking this question; “What drives/drive them to this level of arrogance and kurang ajar?”. And the most scary and worrying thing is, it’s not receding despite the counter offensives by the Malays.

What or who do they have behind them? Without the invisible element/s I don’t think they would be this bold and brazen!

    1. re: “What drives/drive them to this level of arrogance and kurang ajar?”

Because they are Yahudi Yeohs. Look at how Israel reduced Gaza to rubble. Visiting that kind of destruction on another people is arrogance.

re: “What or who do they have behind them? Without the invisible element/s I don’t think they would be this bold and brazen!”

Very bold and too brazen, particularly when they recycled their Bersih 3.0 into “Negara Ku”. Who’s behind them? Follow the money trail. Track Comango for starters.

      1. Helen,

Nowadays Malay politicians, NGOs speaking and defending Malays will be termed as “racist”. They will be quickly reminded (by those worshipping DAP) that Malaysia is for “all”.

Malaysia for Malaysians mean erasing the traces of history. Meaning to them Malaysia at 1957 is already a multiracial country. No need to remember the Raja raja melayu signing Merdeka instrument and effectively granting more than 1 million citizenships to “pendatangs”.

Raja Raja Melayu and Malay politicians at that time did not face racist Chinese politicians like what malay in general are experiencing. Had they can visualize the arrogance of these politicians, they would not have agreed to massive citizenship granted to non malays.

As for changing the name from “Tanah Melayu” to Malaysia, again that is another mistake. And releasing Singapura is another blunder.

But that is not surprising. Nobody said anything when name “bank bumiputera” was erased. Malays still do not want to make it compulsory for malay students to study Jawi, effectively killing it off.

        1. re: “Nowadays Malay politicians, NGOs speaking and defending Malays will be termed as ‘racist’. They will be quickly reminded (by those worshipping DAP) that Malaysia is for ‘all’.”

Dapster Khairy likened Isma to Boko Haram.

re: “Raja Raja Melayu and Malay politicians at that time did not face racist Chinese politicians like what Malay in general are experiencing.”

Correction, they did not face conniving evangelista politicians.

re: “Had they can visualize the arrogance of these politicians, they would not have agreed to massive citizenship granted to non Malays.”

They couldn’t have anticipated because in the 1950s and 60s there were no signs of Christian evangelism of the City Harvest kind (touting prosperity gospel tailor-made for the Chinese) and the melding of religion with politics, i.e. political Christianity akin to political Islam.

re: “And releasing Singapura is another blunder.”

          Kedah should take back Penang.

          2. Helen,

But in all honesty, DAP is not alone in painting those who defend Malays as racist. PAS has its fair of share too. PAS for as long as anyone can remember accuses UMNO as racist as UMNO defends the rights of Malays(at least in its cause).

And as PAS claims Islamic moral ground, it deems those who are against PAS as waging war on Islam.

Islam never has problem with races. it recognises identity and encourages diversity. In fact Islam reminds Muslims that just because Prophet Muhammad was an Arab and Quran in in Arabic do not make Arabs special .

What islam disallowed is using race to justify cruelty or unfairness. As long as cultural practises are not against Islam, they are allowed. Therefore, defending Malays are not assabiyah AS LONG the practices do not violate the rights of non Malays.

But for political expediency, PAS lied to its fans. PAS in order to weaken UMNO paints UMNO as unislamic simply because UMNO”s agenda is defending malays.

I realises I have been spending much time telling off Malays that defending malays as not being racist. In many occasions, I explained that as the states for centuries known as Malay states and when British tried to change them into full fledged colonial territories, UMNO was created to defend the Malay states.

ONly then they begin to understand.

          3. Helen,

If I have access to Sultan of kedah( current Yang diPertuan Agung), I will certainly advise His Highness to do that.

Penang is technically a territory under the Sultan’s sovereignty.

ONE THING THAT i am certain is that DAP in power is a disaster to racial ties between Malays and chinese.

Unfortunately I must admit that Malays sometimes do take thing superficially. They underestimate the cruelty that DAP can inflict to them.

But that is not surprising. Najib seems to “love” these species.

            1. re: “But that is not surprising. Najib seems to ‘love’ these species.”

              KJ too.

              1. Helen,

Yup. Ever since Khairy was so “willing” to be a postman to deliver Anwar’s international passport, I lost trust on him. UMNO is courting disaster with Khairy as ketua pemuda.

            2. ‘Penang is technically a territory under the Sultan’s sovereignty.’

Putrajaya, I believe still acknowledged that. And had recently too, strengthened the fact that it is technically a territory under the HRH Sultan Kedah sovereignty, with the second bridge name after HRH Sultan Kedah. It is not for no reason that Pulau Pinang still enjoys cheap waters from Kedah.

              1. Why refer to agreements that were retrospective and inferior to the Fed Con? Fed Con in Art. 1 already provide that Penang is one of the states in the Federation of Malaysia. Anyway, I am no legal expert. If taking back Penang is so easy, Kedah would have done that long time ago especially when BN controlled 2/3 of Parliament and Penang under BN rule.

  5. I am very ok with the change of name from Persekutuan Tanah Melayu to Malaysia.

I do not feel the change of name to Malaysia has some or any bearing over what actually is transpiring within Malaysia currently. The PKM was already rearing its ugly head, many years prior to the name change to Malaysia. The cucu cicit of PKM is simply carrying on with the legacy, albeit under a different cloak. Whatever has taken place is largely a result of deplorable UMNO leaders, after the relinquishment of Tun Dr Mahathir from the premiership post.

And whenever the voice of the current PM lingered into my ears (over the tv or radio), there was nothing else that I felt, except negative vibes filling my soul. I no longer feel there is anymore sincerety left in him. Come GE14, I envision UMNO will not be nailing but rather riveting its very own coffin for eventual cremation.

  6. Tengok tv “live” PERARAKAN MERDEKA Dari JB.

Kat DATARAN tub semua muka Melayu.

Orang China tak SAMBUT MERDEKA KAH? Dia orang tak SUKA MALAYSIA KAH?

    1. Diorg akan sambut dan bergembira hanya sekiranya negara ini mereka yg punya dan perintah.. sama mcm ‘a nation down south’ tu.. tapi sekarang kita ada our very own ‘a state up north’… it wont be long we could see history repeating itself klu kita masih punya PM najib…

    1. oh oh you hit a nerve on this RBA Helen. They will go ballistic on anyone who dares to discuss history and facts like a rational person.

  8. This is biadap act by LGE …. PM Najib should not allow this cancer to grow. Does LGE has a plan to be out of Malaysia? His conduct sure shows that he does.

What type of a leader has DAP grown …. surely one that is not fit to lead the nation. Ever!!!

    1. LGE is trying to imitate what LKY did during tungku’s time and nauzubillah minta dijauhkan PM najib pun akan imitate what the ‘wise’ old man did during his time

      1. Hah Jamizul bunyi satu macam nampak

Entity persekutuan merangkumi negeri-negeri selat tiada undang-undang over a sovereign state boleh terkeluar that umpama rambut diikat tersimpul mati (kukuh) tak dengar ka ucapan PM di ambang merdeka berfalasafah berselfie

…merdeka..’

  10. Our forefathers of co-independence cannot be blame on two thing

    1. dubious undertaking facing uprising insurgents of CPM and internal demand of local chinese NGO’s and educationist and christians a perjuangan belum selesai dan bibit-bibit ini terpancar dengan pengujudan resurface pasukan brigade suka rela anjuran kerajaan negeri pp umum dan matlamatnya menghalalkan cara the ends justify the means apa yang jelas dengan lagak legacy LGE menyanggah KPN amat membahayakan perpaduan negara bangsa.

Meaningfully this kind of habitation of Malaysian if not dealt firmly I doubt twice this country will fall array.

  11. Re All three were men of a different breed from the Chinese politicians we have now. Molotov cocktail was hurled into Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s house around 11.45 pm. Police arrived to investigate while reporters were milling outside the house.

According to Lim’s Press Secretary, Wong Kim Fei, Lim will let the police investigate before making any comments.

Members of the media were there till about 2.30 am. [Facebook]

    1. Just read about this Mulan. Hope the police and special branch will do indepth investigation to determine their origins, are they Malaysians, are their identification papers (birth cert, mycard) genuine, are they foreigners or PATIs?

If they are doing business are their license and permits in order.

The types of business, check their income taxes.

Pembantu di rumah (many are so free) are there any ‘karpal singh’ types of foreigners employed illegally.

Bini and mistresses, are they foreign or PATIs

  14. helen, i think if tokong brycreem head gets even bigger than it is now, he may be heading for the slammer again. let me share with you this status from my fb friend, Lim Sian See, which i think has traction…

~~ Does Lim Guan Eng know that our Yang di-Pertuan Agong is the patron and 5-Star head of Police DiRaja Malaysia?

Hence the “DiRaja” in the name.

Therefore if Lim Guan Eng insist on being stubborn and continuing to challenge the IGP and our PDRM by continually defending the illegal PPS, he is directly challenging our King. ( http://tinyurl.com/opvobxn )

Why is Lim Guan Eng so blatant that just days after the IGP and our Home Ministry declared that the PPS is an illegal organization and just mere hours after our Home Minister Zahid advised Lim Guan Eng not to challenge the IGP, Lim Guan Eng still wanted to march 250 PPS members in the Penang Merdeka parade?

Does Lim Guan Eng really want to wage war against the Agong?

If Lim Guan Eng wants to continue going down this route, he must be aware of the consequences.

Such consequences may even include the Police or Agong declaring that Lim Guan Eng, the Penang State Govt and PPS is “waging war against the King” and there could even be mass arrests and an “emergency” declared in Penang with the suspension of the State Assembly.

We have laws here in Malaysia, you know. And these laws apply to a Tokong too. We can’t have private militias numbering in the thousands running around in our country.

Things did not turn out quite well for the last group, the Al-Mau’nah, that “waged war against the King,

Please, Mr Lim Guan Eng. Stop being lansi.

Simple thing like registering with ROS and checking with Police on the legality of your PPS also you don’t want to do and still want to challenge everyone.

Suspend the PPS and apologize to the police before the game becomes too big for you to play.

This is not a debate in the DUN or in Parliament.

This is not a war you can win, dear Tokong.

Stop this nonsense before you bring more chaos and hardship to Penang people and Malaysia. ~~

    1. (1) They should be called bajungu – the Purple Shirts. PPS is too insipid.

      (2) Penang is more than sticking out as a sore thumb. Chinese Penangites, especially the islanders, have little inkling how other people view them. They live in an insular, parochial bubble.

      (3) LGE is a disaster for the Chinese community. Not content with leading the Chinese to the edge of the precipice, his party is stirring shit in Sabah and Sarawak among the native Christians. LKS is there in Keningau even as we speak.

      (4) DAP evangelistas are a menace to the peace and security of this country.

      (3)

      1. The Purple Shirts or whatever you choose to call them, they are his private army. My friends, some of them are starting to wonder if he and his party are trying to instigate a rebellion.

I mean, this Purple Shirts, the number is now 10000+ and who knows how many will sign up later. I hope the police look seriously at this. We could be really heading for a confrontation or worse a war if things go really wrong.

      2. Well, Thailand has the Red Shirts and the Yellow Shirts.

Benito Mussolini had the Fascist Brown Shirts in Italy in the run up to WW II.

What’s it about people and the colours of their shirts?

And “what edge of the precipice” are we talking about?

ISIS-style campaigns to weed out “infidels” and “unbelievers”?

Well, there’s nothing a good old-fashioned round of sanctions can’t do.

Like what the US and the EU are doing to Iran and Putin’s Russia.

Perish the thought that Malaysia could ever face the prospect of sanctions because of unforeseen circumstances like the “edge of the precipice”!

It’s a pity that those affected by verbal diarrhea don’t realise that in this interconnected world, you can’t get away by being beastly to others.

And that includes those who make free with “evangelista” pejoratives!

    2. ‘Does Lim Guan Eng really want to wage war against the Agong?’

And why not, this guy together with Anwar and gangs already wage war on HRH Sultan Selangor. It is a matter of time these samsengs show us their true colours!

Surat khabar Utusan Dan TV3 yang dah lama menyebarkan ideologi UMNO sahaja kini pun dah menyebarkan ideologi NGO seperti ISMA, PERKASA dll. Jadi mereka pun dah ada pilihan pejuang mereka mengikut cita rasa masing-masing.

Ni lah penyakit PHD yang sesetengah Mereka yang gelar mereka Melayu mengidapi. Mereka-mereka ni tak de jawatan kat UMNO tetapi nak buat cara back door.

    Mana lah tau?

    1. If Kedah can take back Penang, then I’ll believe you.

For the moment, they’re behaving like they’re the Republic of (you-know-what) North.

  16. Kira mcm UAE le. Emiriyah Arab Bersatu. Negeri Melayu Bersatu or to be exact PERSEKUTUAN TANAH MELAYU.

  17. Finally the cops acted against these baju-ungu-dungus. Good! Hopefully no inteference from KJ, Nazri etc to u-turn this.

All this purple reminds me of Barney the purple dinosaur and his highly annoying song, “I LOVE you, you LOVE me, we are one big happy family…” Ahhh, love love. Now I geddit!

  18. My humble opinion on the topic of any regret? It can be equivalent to a car. A proton car. Let us take that exora car. The name is exora and its characteristic is an 1.6 mpv.

If let says Proton wants to sell it in Africa, but the name Exora is not good enough for the market and it has to change for another name. Let say Esora. Does the change of name means the automatic change of the character of the MPV?

No, it does not. It is still the Exora, the 1.6 MPV. I cannot be in Africa and saying that this is not Exora the same that I ride in Malaysia.

The same goes to Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, does the name Malay-sia change the characteristic of the mentioned Persekutuan Tanah Melayu?

For me it is just the modernised version of the previously named Tanah Melayu. Any regret? No, so long I know the name does not change the original attributes of the land.

    1. Kenapa agaknya majlis tempatan enggan meluluskan papan tanda Isma yang menyebut “Tanah Melayu”?

      null

        1. Pesanan “sama-sama berjuang demi keagungan Islam” adalah sunnah.

“Sama-sama berjuang demi kedaulatan bangsa Melayu” rasanya tiada apa-apa pun. Bukankah kita mendaulatkan bahasa Melayu sebagai bahasa kebangsaan?

              null

              1. Kalau nak kata Selangor tu lebih metropolitan, mungkin ya. Kecuali di kawasan kampung.

kalau nak kata Selangor mencorakkan trend.

        1. I’m not a lawyer or constitutional expert. Can’t answer you.

But legal name aside, if a lot of Malays today believe that their tanahair is bumi Melayu, then our country will be governed as tanah Melayu.

The only question that remains is what about Sabah and Sarawak?

          (a) Sabah is ruled by Umno. The state religion is Islam and the majority of Sabah’s population is Muslim. (Side note: Sabahan cabinet ministers SSK and ARD are staunch Naib backers.)

So Sabah falls within the Malay sphere of influence.

          (b) Sarawak? It’s the only entity standing in the way of Malay hegemony.

At present Sarawak is still majority Christian. The day when (not if) Sarawak becomes majority Muslim, the Malay hegemony will be total.

          1. re: Malay hegemony will be total.

Why need to wait for “Sarawak becomes majority Muslim” to have “Malay hegemony will be total”?

Putting Sarawak aside, Peninsular and Sabah already can move to achieve Malay hegemony in total. Fed gomen can start to implement Kelantan policies. After all, Malay = Islam. Can implement hudud, ban cinemas, ban alcohol, ban gambling, ban sexy commercials, ban conventional banking etc etc.

Why still not yet restore the power of King to approve laws and replace the supremacy of Fed Con with Quran?

What is stopping the Fed gomen?

  19. Kalau tukar nama ke persekutuan Tanah Melayu maka Sabah dan Sarawak perlu dikeluarkan dan dibiarkan merdeka sendiri… sebab ianya berbagai kaum… mana mungkin dorang mau tananya di panggil tanah melayu.

      1. re: rumpun Melayu?

How you come to this conclusion?

mundu is correct. Tanah Melayu does not include Sabah and Sarawak. There is no Tanah Melayu today. What we have is Malaysia.

        1. re: “rumpun Melayu? How you come to this conclusion?”

Are you in agreement then with Jacqueline Ann Surin that bangsa Melayu is an artificial construct?

re: “mundu is correct. Tanah Melayu does not include Sabah and Sarawak. There is no Tanah Melayu today. What we have is Malaysia.”

Malaysia is defined in Article 160 as the Federation of 1957. Same.

  20. isma shg chg it to “tanah-tanah (termasuk s & s) melayu dan hanya untuk melayu”. then evetything is more clear.

  21. LKS+ LGE=LKY only spelling different. “Di sini lahirnya sebuah cinta” sound too melodramatic don’t know why Najib agreed to it.. ‘Bersatu dan Maju sounds patriotic, maybe there a miss up of consultants in Najibs and LGE.

Whatever is it ‘Selamat Menyambut Hari Merdeka’. We are all Malaysian ‘LET’s MOVE FORWARD’.

  22. Federal Govt should do something to low down this LGE idiot from doing anything he dim fit to his desire. He think Penang was owned by his father?

  23. Before Penang was given to the British, it belonged to Kedah. So, I dont think it is correct to only recognize the formation of Penang only after it became a british settlement.

      1. Penang map sketched by Captain Walter Alves in 1763.

Shows a watering place at what is now the Dato Kramat and Batu Uban area.

Penang inhabited by Malays as early as 1705.

  24. I am ok with the changing of the country’s name from Tanah Melayu to Malaysia.

I am more concerned on the well being of the country NOW and in the FUTURE.

There’s nothing to gain by dabbling on histories. There are plenty of national issues now that need to be tackled. Harping on histories wont change our current states of affairs or map our future.

I would tell to the sentimentalists; ‘MOVE ON LAAAA”!
