Why is Dr M doing what he is doing?

August 19, 2014 at 10:12 pm 82 comments

First, the question of Dr Mahathir’s timing.

Coincidentally or not, two former group editors of the major Umno-owned papers uploaded commentaries in their respective blogs – and at about the same time too – on the Tun’s hand grenade lobbed at Najib Razak.

They are the Tokoh-Tokoh Wartawan Zainuddin Maidin (2006 awardee) and Kadir Jasin (2011), both seen in popular public perception as being ‘close’ to Dr Mahathir, what with all three being Kedahans.

So why did Dr M choose to rock the boat at this particular juncture?

Theory #1: To create a counter-current wave at the Umno assembly

Zam’s reading of the situation:

(in Zamkata blog)

Theory #2: To straighten out the blur and clueless Najib

Pak Kadir’s take is that the Tun had indeed penned a scathing and open criticism, and not only that but “the PM deserves every word that Dr Mahathir hurled at him”.

“Tetapi sesiapa saja yang membacanya akan mendapati bahawa ia lebih daripada teguran. Ia berupa kritikan paling tajam dan paling terbuka…” (in The Scribe, A. Kadir Jasin’s blog)

Elaborating on the ex-premier’s dissatisfaction, Kadir told TMI: “In the early stages, Tun would make an effort to see Najib about these problems. But over the years, he realised that the person he thought would listen to him was not really listening”.

Thus it has come to a point where Tun’s patience with Najib finally snapped.

Giving an interview to Malaysiakini, Kadir said: “When Najib took over, he gradually distanced himself from Mahathir. He did not take Mahathir’s advice in many areas”.

“If he said he regretted (choosing Najib), I believe he has every reason to say so,” Kadir added.

Dr Mahathir’s chilling recall of history … repeating itself?

The passages penned by the Tun below, relating why he’s withdrawing his support from Najib, are ominous:

(i) Dr M chided Tunku … Tunku withdrew from the political scene

“Apabila YTM Tunku membuat beberapa dasar dan tindakan yang tidak disenangi oleh ramai orang Melayu, saya menulis surat menegur Tunku.

“Walaupun kerananya saya dipecat, tetapi YTM Tunku meletak jawatan sebagai Perdana Menteri. Mungkin bukan kerana teguran saya, tetapi hakikatnya Tunku mengundur diri.” (in Che Det blog)

(ii) Dr M chided Abdullah Badawi … AAB resigned

“Demikian juga dengan Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Mungkin kerana teguran, mungkin kerana prestasi buruk Pilihanraya ke 12. Tetapi hakikatnya Tun Abdullah juga letak jawatan.”

(iii) Dr M himself was chided … he resigned

“Saya sendiri pun letak jawatan. Sebahagian dari sebabnya ialah kerana saya dengar bisik-bisik yang menyoal “Bila lagi orang tua ini akan pergi.” Saya percaya jika saya tidak letak jawatan, bisik akan jadi jeritan.”

The leitmotif above of Resignation-Resignation-Resignation cannot be missed, what more with Tun being such an experienced and consummate writer. The parallelism is repeated thrice as a powerful rhetorical device.

Furthermore, it is obvious that Dr M’s piece was written with calculated deliberation. A major blow against the sitting prime minister does not come about without a whole lot of thought and strategizing behind it.

What’s motivating Mahathir?

Zam’s observation may lend an insight. It is the Malay Dilemma all over again – “kehilangan keyakinan suatu bangsa yang merasa terumbang-ambing dalam kepimpinan yang tidak jelas dan tidak tegas untuk menjamin masa depan mereka di negara sendiri”.

By the way, the Tan Sri wrote a bestselling biography titled Mahathir di Sebalik Tabir. So we can say that Zam is a practiced Mahathir watcher.

Even last year Kit Siang contesting Gelang Patah had already raised Dr M’s hackles. The DAP juggernaut has since then rolled all the way to Johor, Umno’s place of birth while Christianity – the new ethos of DAP the Ubah party – is resurgent in a strident, evangelical form.

The likes of Isma and its fellow NGOs are stoking the Malay-Muslim sense of insecurity and feeling besieged. Umno under Najib has lost the plot. Only Tun can seize back the national narrative because he is such a dedicated if not dogged ideologue.

Racial and religious tensions on the rise

Speaking to the press after the controversy broke, Dr M sought to explain his drastic actions:

His line “orang tidak hormat kepada Perlembagaan lagi” is telling. Dr M is concerned about the “social contract” and erosion of Article 153, especially in the wake of Najib’s harakiri initiatives like the NUCC.

Tun is a moderate at heart

Najib is not much better than his brother Nazir in their grasp, or more accurately, inability to menghayati jiwa Melayu – the roh Melayu which Dr M has in spades.

It was only very recently Dr Mahathir pronounced that the chances for a non-racial Malaysia are minimal. The Tun is a realist and he is right.

“We will continue to be identified by race because the moderates in society dare not rebut what is being said by the extremists in the society,” he told reporters a mere couple of days ago (16 Aug 2014).

Dr M is in touch with the frustrations of the Malay grassroots. He believes Najib is “too soft” and too silent on contentious issues. The PM’s lack of firmness is allowing the extremists to get the upper hand and not to mention to falsely masquerade as ‘moderates’ – which they decidedly are not.

No rest for the nonagenarian

Under Najib’s watch, the BN multiracial formula went to pieces in the peninsula so that the only way to preserve Malay sovereignty is to invoke Umno-PAS unity. This last resort is the scenario unfolding in Selangor.

Although he is a hundred years old (okay, touching 90), Tun is nonetheless forced to roll up his sleeves because he – as well as we – can all see that the centre cannot hold.

Najib is not centred. He is neither here nor there. The country is spinning out of control and Najib is quite unable to provide the centre of gravity.

Dr Mahathir is taking action in order to save Malaysia.

The grand old man did say at this point Najib is the best UMNO has and yes Najib is still the best. What DR M say is just to knee jerk Najib and that’s it and if Najib wakes ups then it good for Malaysia.

By the way, Chinese choose what they wish and that what they get, A multi racial tension when they dump MCA to ‘Ah Tong’ and ‘Sam Pah’, you know what I mean, its a Bird!, Its a Man! No, Its DAPSTERS!

The timing of TDM writing is very good. He wants all of us not only Malays but Malaysians to respect the Federal Constitution and with that respect we can continue to live harmoniously.

Najib encourages especially Chinese to go against the Constitution by being silence. I believe that if Najib continues to be PM we will see Malays and Islam will be subject to unprovoked criticisms that can spell a disaster for all of us.

        Helen,

Out of love to Tun Razak, UMNO was willing to put Najib Razak to contest in Pekan upon death of his father. He was 22. There were many other more qualified candidates. But in magnaminity, UMNO chose Najib.

And due to being son of a premier, “jalan terbentang luas kepada Nazir”. Nothing amazing about that. Nazir would not have been where he is now had not for his father’s influence.

Both are at where they are now due to (mainly) of their father’s position as then Prime Minister. Just like Guan Eng is Penang Ketua Menteri now.

BUT BOTH(Najib and Nazir) are “detached ” from the Malays. Both ignore the fct that Tun Razak, their father< was prime Minister due to Malay support. Yes. Malay support. And the malays who supported Tun Razak lived in Jitra, Arau, Sabak Bernam among others. The Malays who supported Tun Razak live in strange sounding names. But Malays they are.

So, it is a tragedy when both look down on Malays. . How they look down on Malays? Did Najib consult these Malays when he abolish ISA? Did Najib consult these Malays when he appointed those in Konsultasi Nasional?

Did Najib care to make mega dinner in Kodiang the way he organised for Chinese? Did Najib care to understand Malays when he still want MCA to be in Cabinet when all the sign in the world show that Chinese abandon him?

Is Nazir aware that so many scathing remarks made against him by Malay staff in CIMB? blowing out of proportion or not but the sentiment is real.

Malays are treated the way PAS is treated. When it comes to garner votes, Najib goes all out in Malay areas. when it comes to making decision or appointing people , Najib seems to be happy filling it with those who want him dead literally. Just like PAS. When it comes to marching on the street and provoking police, PAS takes centre stage. When comes to decision, PAS just asked to abide.

MAY ALLAH SWT BLESS Tun Dr Mahathir for reprimanding Najib. Najib is simply clueless bordering ungrateful.

Kak Helen, I’m back!! Came back from holiday in Manila and got to go through all the bullshits that Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PISsed) have been pulling. See! I told you there’ll be no such thing as Malay-Unity gomen.

PISsed don’t consider themselves Malay la, they’re Malaysians just like the Firsters. Kak Annie must be so disappointed, kesian Kak Annie, she was hoping for that actually.

        Hey Dandy,

        (1) “Dr Mahathir is taking action in order to save Malaysia.?”
From whom ah? Planet of Ork? Martians? Suluk? Maklluk Halus? Jin?

Save Malaysia from those Negaraku people lah, who wants to save Malaysia from Pakatan and Bersih etc. They were so not convinced with Pakatan and Bersih, that the same bunch of losers had to create another stupid outfit to save Malaysia from themselves.

        (2) “His eroding power and influence is making him amok? It’s a mental illness, mind you.”

Er, really? If that is the case, people won’t be paying too much attention to what he’s saying and react to it. Dr. M is no longer part of the gomen, so he speaks his mind as a Malaysian citizen, whose right to give opinion is eternally champion by Pakatan Rakyat.

If he craves power and influence, he’ll just need to force Najib to appoint him as Senior Minister in the cabinet. Then when Mukriz becomes the new PM, Mukriz can appoint Dr. M as Minister Mentor whereas Najib as the new Senior Minister. An island which is a shining beacon of meritocracy did this but nobody ever question about it, so Malaysia can do the same, that is if Dr. M craves power and influence so much as alleged.

Plus, Dr. M can also ask Mukhriz to appoint Dr. Siti Hasmah as the new MB of Kedah via ‘Langkah Airport Kulim’. Mukriz won’t appoint his wife as MB of Kedah, MB of Selangor is more suitable. And that is for a start, ok.

        (3) “Mamak Keling ni tau perang guna lidah berbelit jer. Empire Kalinga tergugat dah dan semakin menghampiri hayatnya. Kroni dan pengampunya semakin hilang diri kerrana dah semakin tua macam beliau dan uzur. Apalah nak buat? Ginseng berbotol-botol pon tak guna lagi dah.”

Kesian. Keep telling that to yourself. Keep on wallowing in that luxurious delusion.

Seriously? When he sacked Anwar, there were already blogs and websites. Other formats of social media not yet available. Sekarang dah ada twitter etc., that’s why Speaker DUN Selangor tk habis2 merapu dalam twitter.

Gaji besar, kereta besar, nafsu besar dan semuanya pun besar juga, tp DUN tak bersidang sepanjang tahun. So senanglah nak merapu sbb byk masa terluang supaya “suara dan pendapat supaya kelentong dia sahaja yang didengari.” Hahahahahahah!

The Star, Malaysiakini, Malaysian Insider, FMT and mcm2 lagi asyik tunjuk gambar Dr. M sahaja. Editor kat situ semua taksub sangat ke dgn Dr. M? Asyik2 komen Dr. M saja, org puji Dr. M, org sokong Dr. M especially dlm ruangan forum.

Cubalah tunjuk muka Tokong Lim, Stopa Spenda ke, Mat Sabun ke ataupun Jijah Ironing Board. Contohilah the Star.

Memanglah. Kit Siang dengan Diyana tu, merpati dua sejoli, muka pun macam pinang dibelah dua. Sebab tu muka Kit Siang dgn Dr. M pun jauh beza macam langit dengan bumi. Hahahahahahah!

        (7) “Anwar menunggu nak tumbuk mata Mamak ni sampai hitam biru tau tak? Kalau tak berdaya, boleh bagi kontrak kat bekas IGP tu.”

Ramai lagi di Malaysia ni, terutamanya di Selangor yang nak tumbuk mata Anwar sampai tak boleh nampak bini dia tau tak? Kalau kitaorang tak berdaya, kita akan sub-contract pada Shamsidar ataupun Ummi Hafilda.

        Love,

Apart from the ‘counter-current wave at UMNO assembly, Pakatan Rakyat too is in shambles at the moment. Therefore, their politicians would dread commenting on TDM’s rocking the boat.

Their self-interestd political maneuvers and manipulations to change Selangor’s MB, supposedly in rakyat’s name, but which have disregarded us in reality, is more astounding.

Tun saved my ass during the financial crisis, late 90s. Anwar increased the minimum payment on credit cards if any one remembers. Many like me had money left from our salaries to belanja after Tun sacked Mr Perasan Bagus and reversed the interest rate after that. For that Tun, I owe you my support regardless.

Ms H. Our beloved Malaysia is a bountiful land. Why should we the Malaysians live in a land of DECLINING CIVILITY, STANDARDS OF LIVING AND SECURITY ? And the flow of the goodies seem to flow to the apex of the power pyramid, not to the base for the PROLETARIAT/RAKYAT.which happened before 2003 !

Its time some one with influence put a grenade under the beds of the likes of Najb who has gone haywire with his form of liberalism and American style politics of pork barreling and throwing scraps to the public.

The sale of MAS is the latest. There has been no growth that was inspired by Najibs policies in the economic field. It has all been by means of overdrive of the nation chewing off the fat of what Dr. Mahathir’s government laid out for Malaysia. That too is coming to an end.

We have to a large allowed this to happen because there is simply no alternative in Malaysia to bad government. What have we got? Elizabeth Wong and Wan Aziza? or even worse PAS and their Christian version in the Assemblies of God that has produced that awful half human in Selangor?

Malaysia needs another strong man at the helm in order that merit return to being the criteria instead of being a convenient casualty of incompetence.

Time for Najib to be thrown out by the scruff of his neck. He is nothing more than a cheap imitation of that other indolent and unimaginative trash Abdullah Badawi. Badwa!!

true that. it was supposed to be his forte since he is a student of economic. and by right should perform better on this aspect than dr m who holds qualification as a medical practitioner.

the problem with najib is he loves to play safe. but being a premier there are times you need to take a hard stances for long term gain.

an umno guy once told me that the difference of mahathir than other PM is that he has the ability as a fast reader. which is paramount for high hierarchy leaders like PM, presidents, ceos, etc. this make decision making fast and sound to ensure smooth implementation.

but on contrary, najib loves to delay issues cause he’s a playsafer.

A country is akin to a ship. The captain gives direction, XO executes the order thru his bridge staff who relays the order to the various personnel.

The PM needs to have a vision, a direction which must be translated by his Executive Officer (TPM) and bridge staff (Cabinet and Ministries) who needs to make sure that the vision is carried out to completion.

Leadership, by today’s standard, is far more complicated than before. Isolationists are doomed to failure. SoSIAL media will have armchair generals second guessing your every thought.

Excessive “LEADERSHIP” ie micromanagement is a tyranny which is untenable and will implode. Excessive trust in your lieutenants is seen as weak and lacks leadership.

Its a balancing feat akin to crossing “siratul mustaqin”, the fine line no more than a hair’s breadth.

TDM, as much as a visionary and exalted leader that he was, never faced the challenges that DSN faces. Politics is the game of perception. Whomever is capable of creating the most waves and noise will be “seen” as the voice of majority. Yet this is not the gospel truth. Whilst what TDM said rings true to most, the fact remains it isn’t so simple.

The naysayers who gripe about so much given to the “other” races seem to have forgotten that only recently was there even a presence in the Cabinet. Forgotten that the SMI/SME growth to which a majority of Malays are involved in is due to the many policies put in place to help them. Efforts that successfully led to a trickle effect.

“Najib”nomics, as quoted by someone earlier, is successful. That is the FACT. We are stable, we are growing at a sustainable rate and has little to do with the mega project(s).

The Malays are griping about what? The people are griping about what? That is THE QUESTION we need to think on.

What is there to “reform” when nothing is broken? All it takes is a tweak here and a tweak there to return the balance and obtain an equilibrium, the wasatiyyah of a proper LEADER.

You know Temasek is close to Tokong? Temasek in fact is investing heavily in Penang lately. As you know Temasek is headed by the Singapore PM’s wife herself. And I also know that it is crawling with Bangsa Malaysian & ex- Bangsa Malaysians.

If this is true, Pakatan is committing high treason and deserved to go to jail. From what I see, the document is mere executive summary and I would love read the details.

It talks about funding BERSIH, Anti-Lynas, and other alternative media groups and also cybertroopers. I would like to see the details on the financial backers and other companies (local and MNCs) who are plotting with Pakatan to destroy the country and make billions for the war chest.

Najib the man, like his brother the dumb CIMB CEO, he’s lost it. He thinks the nation is going great guns. The GDP numbers, all the money, the make believe data that’s coming out, he thinks they are all real.

No wonder the smart money is fleeing the country. The brains are heading overseas in increasing numbers. The rich are exiting and/or making their exits. The man, he just doesn’t get it. He continues to surround himself with frauds like consultants. Khazanah, PNB etc, they are house of cards. He thinks these house of cards are propelling Malaysia forward.

The holy water he’s drinking is even more poisonous than those consumed by the Dapsters.

    Mamakfiraun buat U-turn?

Keluar kat blog dia kata “Tak sokong lagi Najib lah, Lebih teruk Dari Tun Abdullah etc etc” Apakah maksud semua tu? Buta ke? Dia nak Najib disingkirkan lah”. Bahasa tu mudah sangat difahami.

Tunggu punya menunggu, dah nampak tak ramai yang menyokong, terus kena keluar statement ” I tak suruh dia letak jawatan”. Lepas tu cuba nak redakan kemarahan, kata pulak ” Tak ada orang yang berkaliber sekarang nak granti Najib”. Ni style tipikal Mamak cakap, ler. Berbelit-belit macam lidah Ular berbisa.

Nak kata nyanyuk pon tidak, nak kata kurang ajar pon tak boleh kerana dah status Negarawan, nak kata apa?

So, Dandy terpaksa jadi sasaran untuk pembodek Mahafiraun lepaskan geram. Kan gitu?

Malaysia is unfortunate that its super talented people are few and very difficult to replace once they step out of the limelight.

I don’t see in the present generation of politicians who can replace Dr M.

One generation had passed, but we still can’t find replacements of our great past sports talents like Mokhtar Dahari for football, Sylvia Ng for badminton, Nurul Huda for swimming, M Jegathesan for athletics. I am not surprised that we won’t be able to replace the current world class sports talents like Lee Chong Wei, Nichol David, Pandalela for another generation.

But I hope there will not be another rogue and megalomaniac politician like Anwar, for another 2 generations.

Najib is weak yes. But the whole problem that the Malays are facing is being caused by one Malay idiot Annuar who is out to destroy not only the Malays but Malaysia as a whole. Dap is just using him for their ends.

To foil him TSK should go for a snap election then we will see that the Selangor Malays will show him their buts. Even Dap will panic cause UMNO needs only 17 out of 44 that they hold.

ANOTHER move is to put this traitor inside as quickly as possible for next 10 years SETTLE.

Since you have been slaughtered by the commentators in this blog, come let’s go play kite with me. Why not we go to Sepang, Don’t worry, Sepang is under Mamak Hanipa Maidin, Anwar’s baruah in PAS, these people would not be able to disturb us.

If they bother with us, we can call uncle Lim and brother Guan Eng (Ah Eng). I would request brother Ah Eng to send his enforcers to guard us.

Why don’t we pick the pig project again in Sepang? This time I am very sure, the project will be approved as Khalid is no more the MB. By opening the biggest pig project in SEA, we can chase away the Malays. Then we can convert Sepang to be a Chinese area just like Penang and other big towns.

We can make a lot of money and can provide political fund to our brother Ah Eng. If brother Ah Eng can conquer Putrajaya, we can become very rich as Malaysia is ours to throw away. The Malays can become our coolies.
