Lee Kuan Yew on the rise and rise of the evangelical Christians

Lee Kuan Yew: “You can have enormous trouble once religions clash”

On this date last year, I quoted parts of the former Singapore Prime Minister’s interview with Mark Jacobson of National Geographic for the magazine’s January 2010 edition.

Jacobson had zeroed in on what he called “the recent rise of Evangelical Christians in Singapore”. The NatGeo reporter told Mr Lee, “I went to the New Creation Church [in Singapore] and you might as well have been in Tennessee, it was exactly the same”.

Lee Kuan Yew responded that presently, the English-educated young Singaporeans are questioning why their Chinese parents and grandparents are praying before the traditional altar and worshiping dead ancestors.

Mr Lee said in Singapore there are “Christian groups who go out and evangelize”. These groups catch the youngsters in their late teens “when they’re malleable and open to suggestions”, he explained.

These young Singaporeans who convert to become Born Again Christians then become very fervent evangelists themselves. “My granddaughter is one of them,” added Mr Lee.

Shady, aggressive tactics of the evangelistas

Excerpts from Daily News article on why Singapore’s multiculturalism is unravelling

In March 2009, “pent up religious resentments came to the surface in dramatic fashion, when a secretive group of conservative Chinese Christian women surreptitiously took over” the exco of AWARE (Association of Women for Action and Research).

Half of the Chinese women in the group who snatched control of the council had attended the same church.

crosseyeCritics questioned the “shady tactics” employed by these evangelical Christians.

Meanwhile, two months following the coup by the evangelists, the old exco tabled a no-confidence motion to force an EGM.

“At a stormy meeting the new council [comprising the evangelical Christians] lost the vote and resigned. A new liberal committee was restored with a Buddhist at the helm, a Muslim secretary and a Hindu treasurer.”

“This episode brought to the surface strong resentments within Buddhist, Taoist and Hindu communities in particular about AGGRESSIVE TACTICS used by local Christian evangelical groups rich with cash to lure in young people to their churches.”

“In an unprecedented move Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong dedicated more than half of his 40 minute National Day Speech in August 2009 warning Singaporean about religious intolerance and social exclusion. Though he did not mention any religion by name most Singaporeans knew he was referring mainly to Christian evangelical groups.”

On this date two years ago, I highlighted an article written by Terence Martin published in The Malaysian Insider.

The article by Martin complained that Christians are being made the “bogeyman” and “convenient fall guy to stir the emotions of Muslims”.

He wrote that “hypocritical Muslims” have turned Christians into their “favourite punching bag”.

“Christian bashing”, he said, has caused his community to be subjected to harassment and all kinds of accusations even though it was really the Christians that are the victims when their Bibles are seized and desecrated.

He lamented that “divisive politicians” are the ones leading Malaysia today, and “unbridled suspicion and fear towards others” is being stoked in our present political climate.

He complained that some people “disparage the faith of others to create fear, rifts and conflict”.

I suppose from Martin’s point of view, it might not be so funny that Hannah Yeoh rants how it is the “progressive wickedness” of the BN which gets worse every year.

  1. Ms H. It is not the rise of evangelism but the rise of boredom with a full stomach and a lazy lifestyle of these folks aping the deep South of the United States.

In Singapore, it is the all out pursuit of money, money, money which created a void in the souls of these folks.

In Malaysia, it is the void of feeling far away from home due to the urbanization caused by the NEP which affected them.. On these evangelical phenomenon I concur with LKY.

    1. ED,

Christianity be definition of these fervent preachers are more “fun”. Atendding a mass nowadays can be mistaken to attending rock concert.

Besides, these preachers practise the culture of “permisiveness”. No matter what you do (like embezzlemet or sleeping with your friend’s wife) God still loves you.

Islam, Buddhism with its ritual is deemed as “ketinggalan zaman”.

    2. These are the sayings of the living Jesus, recorded by apostle Thomas, who is called Didymus. Whoever learns the inner meaning of these truths will live forever in the Eternal Sea:

Jesus said, “Everyone who seeks should continue seeking until he finds. When he finds, he will be troubled at the contemplation of Truth, but when he has passed through the time of trouble, he will be astonished at the brightness of the Light, for the Way of Truth is the Pathway to the Eternal God on High, and the price of the beatific vision is the tribulation of the soul. The person who desires to rise above all things must descend below all things, for the way to the heights passes through the depths of anguish, which generate the fires of Life. The person who has suffered and found Life is one blessed.”

  2. Unfortunately, progressive wickedness is a potentiality in each and every human being . . . it is the path of degenerate pride, greed, and envy unchecked by the balance of a good conscience. It occurs under the guise of any “religion”.

    1. Pride – Prada

Greed – want salary matching the PM’s

Envy – Shah Alam not big enough. “Ini kali lah, ABU” they want to sit in Putrajaya

  3. In his twilight years Lee has begun to open his mind to there being a life after. He is also in his own inimitable style, although not wanting to admit to it in so many ways accepted that he prays, meditates reciting the Mantras of a Hindu practice of meditation taught to him by a Catholic practitioner of Indian meditation. His mantra is ” Ma Ra Na Ta” ( instead of the Sanskrit) . Maranata is an Aramic reference in the new testament to the Christ or so they believe.

It was Lee’s brother a Catholic (and I should point out that there is also a “born again ” faction within the Catholic church who are no different to the mad Born Agains elsewhere) who converted (baptised ) their father on his death bed a few months before the old man (the father) who Lee Kuan Yew denounced and ridiculed during his life died.

Lee is questioning his mortality. It is not uncommon with the frailties of age. He is not as elf assured as he was before. There is no life hereafter. he still says that although not as convincingly as before. “No one has yet come back from the other side to prove it if it exists”.

There is a little Mao in Lee. he is allowing the 1000 flowers to bloom. They will devour the old guard in a death of a thousand cuts. The old guard including Hsien Loong will have to become relevant and re invent themselves or die.

Lee Kuan Yew himself is widely believed to have sucembed to the hard sell of the Christian right who were always there for him over the ages. He does not realize that they had planted the seed in him over the years. The fruits of their endeavours are beginning to ripen in his old frail mind.

The Born Agains are the Christian Taleban whether we like it or not. It won’t be long before there is a call to arms from their inner ranks to the mindless slogan chanting plebs they lord over.

    1. Oh, my….forgotten about the depredations and excesses of ISIS, have we?

The “born again evangelistas” certainly don’t go around beheading defenceless captives or forcing “unbelievers” to convert on the point of the sword, do they?

And no one, I repeat no one, has called the Christian “evangelistas” a terrorist threat!

      1. @ TamanT…….aaaah, you again!!!

You cannot seem admit what the real character you are!! You have do not even have the honesty of commenting when asked earlier about the killing of more that 500 innocent children in Gaza or the killing of hundreds of thousands of Muslims in Iraq.

Yet when the truth is said about the ‘real face’ of your evangelist Christians (by one in your own faith, it seems) you desperately point your finger again and again, screaming “ISIS”..”ISIS”.

How far do you think you can fool people not like yourself?? Think and reflect in your quite little corner…. say “Christian Taleban”…”Christian Taleban”.

Tiada elemen provokasi langsung.

Ia serupa cara orang Islam hormati Quran lama dengan tidak dibuang begitu saja tapi dibakar.

Beginilah caranya evangelis Dap meracuni fikiran umum dengan memfokuskan pada Ibrahim nak bakar bible tanpa mengambil ayat sepenuhnya hinggakan pemimpin umno dato Nurjazlan pun terpedaya.

Apatah lagi kalu ada pemimpin umno yang dibasuh otaknya bila khusyuk sangat dengar tarbiah Wong Chun Wai.

    1. The very reason I am very cautious bila bersembang dgn majority of the Apek2. Many are not fluent in BM apatah lagi BI, but they don’t show it, ego maa. They may misunderstand words or sentences probably retranslate according to their bahasa ibunda which most often reads the other way round.

Similarly their bahasa ibunda, you cannot just pick one or two charactors and translate, you need to read the whole sentence to arrive at the exact translation.

I have one customer, very impressive looking and greeted us in fluent English, American brawl pula tu. Thinking he is an English speaker we automatically reply and started conversing in English.. Alamak, gaya saja ma, “soli soli saya tak tau ciakap Engeliss”.

I wonder how their Aduns and MPs function. Notice in many cases during Dewan sessions they staged “walkouts?”. I suspect many do not understand what is being debated and are not able to actively participate inside the Dewan, so they blast their thoughts in their tweeters, their media, road shows or demonstrations to get their messages thru?

Remember Bahasa Mulut? Agaknya direct translation dari bahasa ibunda mana tuh? And coming from a RM22K Speaker of a state in Malaysia?

  5. “Maybe, one day, I can do more, but I also need Chinese community to support BN,” he said in his opening speech at MCA’s 61st annual general meeting.

Then this happen!! Can’t you see that Najib try to increase support for MCA. I guess Chinese don’t take well on what they considered as a threat. [Facebook]

    1. Does the Facebook link that you provided work?

Or maybe because I’ve already deleted my Facebook account and so stuff are no longer visible on my computer screen (??)

        1. Facebook access is multi-level security.

The Facebooks belonging to politicians are usually open to all members of the public, regardless of whether the individual web surfer has a Facebook account or not. So it’s okay, I can still read political jottings.

    2. Does the Facebook link that you provided work?

  6. First, recognise and defeat the 3 unwholesome roots within oneself of greed, hatred and delusion in order for wisdom to flower.

Next. recognise that the actions and motivations of others are driven by these 3 root causes. You can see this clearly in all types of conflicts.

If one is drawn into such clashes, and one opposes them with the same motivation, especially with anger/hatred and delusion/ignorance – then victory and loss will be a never ending cycle, interchanging between the two parties.

The only way out is to be detached, compassionate and clear sighted.
